Chestnut Hill College Appoints PhilaU's Lynn Tubman as Athletics Director

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - (5/4/09) - Chestnut Hill College announced today the hiring of Lynn Tubman as the Director of Athletics and Recreation. Tubman, who brings more than 13 years of athletic administration experience to the College, will begin her new position no later than July 1, 2009.

Lynn comes to Chestnut Hill from Philadelphia University, a Division II member, where she has spent the past five years as Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator and oversaw all compliance issues associated with NCAA Division II athletics.

"Members of the Chestnut Hill College community who interviewed Lynn Tubman recognize in her the qualifications, experience, and values required to be a sound administrator, an advocate for athletes, and a motivational leader," said Sister Carol Jean Vale, president of the College.   "During her career, Lynn has worked at almost every level of collegiate athletic administration, including coaching, and at institutions of varying sizes.  Her experience with NCAA Division II protocols and procedures makes her especially attractive to us during this time of full transition to Division II play.  In welcoming her to the College community, we anticipate her success and that of our athletic teams."

A former All-America women's basketball player at then Allentown College (now DeSales University), Tubman remains the school's all-time leading scorer with 2,193 career points.  She began her career in athletic administration as the Assistant Athletic Director/Resident Director at Penn State-Mont Alto in 1989 before serving as the Director of Athletics at LaRoche College in western Pennsylvania for six years, from 1990 to 1996.  From LaRoche, Tubman returned to the Philadelphia area, serving as the Associate Director of Athletics/Senior Woman Administrator at Drexel University for two and one-half years before taking four years off to focus on raising her two daughters.

"I am very excited to be the next Director of Athletics at Chestnut Hill College. The opportunity to continue to work at the Division II level and within the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) will allow for a smooth transition.  Chestnut Hill College has been a welcome addition to the CACC and I recognize the athletic department's value and potential moving forward," explained Tubman.  Tubman further states, "I feel my personal and professional philosophies mesh well with the mission and values of Chestnut Hill College.  Throughout the entire search process it was evident that it is an exciting time to be a part of the ongoing growth of the College. I am looking forward to athletics continuing to be an integral part of that growth as well as an important component of student life at Chestnut Hill College."

As athletic director at Chestnut Hill College, Tubman will focus on building the athletic program to make teams more competitive within the CACC family, creating a vibrant recreation and intramural program, and introducing new sports to the growing number of varsity offerings at the College.

"I have every confidence that Lynn is the right choice at the right time for our athletic program," said Vale.  "Her style, demeanor, and values are congruent with those of the College's mission.  Therefore, I expect that she will inculcate in coaches and athletes alike a deep understanding of the institution's expectations for the athletic program and instill, as well, the values and ideals of NCAA Division II.  To us, the sportsmanship and character of athletes exceeds in importance any other expectations we may have of them.  It may be a cliché to say ‘it is not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game that matters,' but the words are nonetheless true."
