Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader vs. #10 Caldwell

Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University Rams (5-18, 2-5 CACC) swept a doubleheader against the #10 Caldwell College Cougars (6-11, 1-5 CACC) today at Alumni Field.  The Rams took the first game 9-1, and the night cap 7-5. 

The Rams took the lead on a five run 2nd inning, led by junior shortstop Tyler Mentzer's (Gettysburg, PA/Delone Catholic) two RBI double to left center. PhilaU tacked on another run in the 4th inning on an RBI sacrifice fly from Mentzer, which scored junior centerfielder Dan Ellmer (Trenton, NJ/Nottingham). The Rams added three more runs in the 7th on some small ball and a costly Cougar error. The game ended in a Rams victory by a score of 9-1.

Sophomore right hander Jared Farbman (Philadelphia, PA/Central) held Caldwell in check, throwing eight innings and surrendering just two hits and one run while striking out 13 and walking only two.

In game two of the twin bill, the Rams struck first again, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. PhilaU loaded the bases on a couple of singles and a walk and scratched a run across before freshman left fielder Joe Thayres (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) drive in two runs on a two out single. Caldwell responded in the top of the 2nd inning on a throwing error and passed ball.

The teams traded runs for the next two innings, with Caldwell cutting into the PhilaU lead after a several hits from the Cougars. The Cougars threatened to tie the game in the top of the sixth after an error and a bunt put a runner on third with one out. Right hander Kyle Noonan (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) got out of the inning with a ground ball and strikeout to end the threat. The Rams added another run in the bottom of the sixth after senior first baseman Rob Fisher (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) drove in a run on a triple.

Freshman right hander Garrett Buehler (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) allowed just one earned run on two hits in four innings of work and Noonan came in the final two innings to shut the door, giving the Rams a 7-5 victory.

Leading the way for the Rams in the offensive category was Mentzer, Ellmer and Thayres. The three were a combined 12-for-24 (.500) and drove in nine of the 16 runs that were scored in the double header.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday, April 7th as they travel to Caldwell to finish the season series with the Cougars. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
