Rams Take Season Series vs. Deacons, Win Final Game of the Year in Style

Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University Rams (17-27, 14-13 CACC) completed a three game series with the Bloomfield College Deacons (17-23, 14-11 CACC), taking game one 12-4 Friday night and split the doubleheader, losing game one 4-1 and taking game two 3-2.

In the game on Friday night, a one sided affair, the Rams took the lead in the first inning but Bloomfield responded with a run in bottom half of the inning. Sophomore right hander Jared Farbman (Philadelphia, PA/Central) led the way, throwing 8.0 innings and allowing just three hits and one run while striking out four. PhilaU never relinquished the lead and took the game 12-4. On the offensive side, PhilaU was led by sophomore first baseman Kevin McGovern (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) and junior shortstop Tyler Mentzer (Gettysburg, PA/Delone Catholic). McGovern was 3-for-4 with an RBI while Mentzer was 2-for-4 with five RBI's, supplying the Rams with most of the offensive fire power on the evening.

In game one of the doubleheader Saturday afternoon, the Rams struck first, scoring a run in the fourth inning on a squeeze bunt by senior catcher Jason Hartley (Levittown, PA/Neshaminy) that scored junior first baseman Rob Fisher (Philadelphia, PA/ Archbishop Ryan). The Deacons responded in the top of the fifth, scoring a run on an RBI single.

The Deacons took the lead 2-1 after a passed ball scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. Bloomfield added two more runs after a double cleared the bases to give the Deacons a 4-1 lead. The Rams were unable to respond and Bloomfield took game one of the doubleheader 4-1.

In game two on Saturday, Bloomfield struck first, scoring two runs in the second inning on a pair of walks and a pair of singles. The Rams responded in the third inning when a single off the bat of Tyler Mentzer scored senior outfielder Dan Ellmer (Trenton, NJ/Nottingham). The game remained 2-1 going into the seventh inning, with both pitchers throwing well and minimizing the damage. The Rams were able to rally late, loading the bases before a walk off double from Mentzer scored two runs and PhilaU took game two 3-2.

Leading the way for the Rams this weekend was the pitching staff of Jared Farbman, freshman right hander Garrett Buehler Harleysville, PA/Souderton), and senior right hander Kyle Noonan (Morristwon, NJ/Morristown).

Buehler and Noonan both went the distance, with Noonan throwing nine innings and Buehler throwing seven. Noonan allowed seven hits and only two earned runs while striking out three in the loss. Buehler was equally as impressive, allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out three.

Next up for the Rams is a potential berth into the CACC playoffs. They must wait out the rest of the weekend to see if they clinch a spot.
