Philadelphia, PA- Heading into the final stretch of the spring season, four Philadelphia University student-athletes have earned Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) awards this past week.
The week was highlighted by men’s tennis sophomore Adrian Torroella-Cruz’s (Gainesville, FL/ Gainesville) CACC Singles and Doubles Championship, earning him CACC ‘Player of the Year’ accolades for the second consecutive year. For his performances, he was named this week’s conference ‘Player of the Week’ and also a CACC All-Conference selection.
Fellow men’s tennis player, junior Manoli Sgouros (Forest Hills, NY/ Holy Cross) was the other half of the CACC Doubles champion team with Torroella-Cruz. He also advanced to the singles bracket championship, falling to his doubles’ partner. Sgouros earned CACC All-Conference accolades and is an ‘Honorable Mention’ honoree this week.
Softball sophomore pitcher Ali Schmidt (Cordova, MD/ Easton) proved she had the right stuff last week, tossing the first-ever ‘perfect game’ in PhilaU softball history and then did it again just four days later. She was named CACC ‘Pitcher of the Week’ this week. The engineering major went 5-0 on the week, with a 1.36 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 33 innings pitched.
Baseball senior shortstop Tyler Mentzer (Gettysburg, PA/ Delone Catholic) earned a CACC ‘Honorable Mention’ after hitting .500 for the week with four RBIs and five runs scored.
