Sarah Simonetti, Coach Magee Honored by Philly Sports Writers
Cherry Hill, NJ- Philadelphia University cross-country junior runner Sarah Simonetti was awarded at the 107th Philadelphia Sports Writers Association (PSWA) dinner Monday night (1/31) for being one of Philadelphia’s outstanding collegiate athletes. The Perkasie, PA native was a distinguished guest at the head table during the evening’s festivities. Other recipients including Philadelphia Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino and pitcher Roy Halladay, Philadelphia 76ers big man Elton Brand and Flyer right wing Ian Laperriere.
Simonetti’s PSWA award will join the many others she has received throughout her distinguished collegiate career. She is the first PhilaU and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) runner to qualify for the NCAA cross-country national championships (’09), she also holds the Ram’s school record for the 5K (18:51). Some of her awards include being a three-time NCAA East All-Region runner, 2010 “Runner of the Year”, 2008 CACC “Rookie of the Year” along with a three-time CACC All-Conference selection.
Simonetti was not the only PhilaU attendee to be honored; PhilaU men’s head basketball coach Herb Magee was recognized by the PSWA for his historic 903 wins achieved last season. Coach Magee reached the milestone on February 23rd, 2010 when he surpassed Bobby Knight and became the all-time winningest NCAA men's basketball coach (in NCAA wins) with a 76-65 victory over Goldey-Beacom College.
