Academic All-Stars Honored in Philadelphia Inquirer
Philadelphia, PA- Four Philadelphia University student-athletes were recently featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper as ‘Academic All-Stars’. The teams are voted on by the sports information offices at the 28 institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area (known as Philly-SIDA), with minimal requirements including a 3.0 GPA and significant athletic accomplishments.
Headlining this talented group was baseball senior shortstop Tyler Mentzer, who was named the Baseball All-Academic ‘Player of the Year’. He was an American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings NCAA DII East All-Region 2nd Team selection and a National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association (NCBWA) All-East Region 1st Team pick this season.
Mentzer also held a 3.61 cumulative GPA as an architecture major. He led the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) with a .404 batting average and was the only hitter above .400 at the end of the regular-season.
Also receiving a spot on their sport’s respective All-Academic teams were: women’s rowing members Briana Zelinski and Carolyn Steinberg and men’s rower Thomas Ferree-Gooding.
