Philadelphia, PA- It is with great sadness that the University informs you of the passing of Lorraine Harris, widow of Walter “Bucky” Harris. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, September 21 at 10 a.m. at the Falls/Schuylkill Presbyterian Church at Midvale Avenue and Vaux Street.
Both Lorraine and Bucky Harris had been employed by the University. Bucky, who passed away in 2006, worked in several capacities in his 46 years at the University, including as director of Athletics, as well as director of Physical Plant. He gained national notoriety for his accomplishments as head men’s basketball coach. Their son, Billy, an alumnus of Philadelphia University, passed away in 1986 from leukemia and the Harris family established a scholarship in his name that today remains the largest endowed scholarship at Philadelphia University. The Bucky Harris Gym was named in honor of her husband. Both Lorraine and Bucky Harris were inducted into the Philadelphia University Athletics Hall of Fame.
Survivors include her son Walter Jr. (“Buddy”), daughter Marianne, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The University extends its sincere sympathy to the Harris family on their loss.
