Weekly Ram Report

The Philadelphia University men's tennis team is playing its best tennis of the season in recent weeks and with its 2-1 record last week, improved to 13-8 overall on the year.  The 13 wins represent the most victories for the program since 1999, when Head Coach Marty Gilbert's squad finished with a 13-9 mark.  The Rams' week got off to a stellar start on April 15th at home with a 9-0 win over Caldwell College.  Senior Alex Richter, playing at #1 singles for the first time this season, earned a key three-set victory, rallying from one set down to take a 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 decision.  Earlier in the match, Richter teamed with freshman Tom McAvoy for a convincing 8-0 victory at #3 doubles in helping the Rams to the sweep.  In its next outing, Philadelphia University had its season-high five match winning streak snapped, falling to Adelphi University at home on April 16th by a final score of 7-2.  Freshman Seppi Hutter posted the lone singles win for the Rams with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at #6 while Richter and McAvoy earned the team's other point, an 8-4 win at #3 doubles.  Gilbert and his team bounced back in their final contest of the week, however, taking a 9-0 decision from Post University at home on April 19th.  The shutout of the Eagles was the sixth of the year for the Rams.  Freshman Kyle Kaltenbacher, senior Anders Novesky, Hutter and sophomore Mario Bermeo all won by scores of 6-0, 6-0 in singles play for Philadelphia University, which will be back in action on Friday, April 25th, hosting St. Thomas Aquinas College at the Main Campus Courts.

Here is a look at how the rest of the varsity athletic teams fared this past week:

BASEBALL (12-18 overall, 10-6 CACC) - It was a busy week for Head Coach Mark Heineman and his Philadelphia University baseball team, which played six contests, picking up three victories.  The Rams began the week on the road at Nyack College on April 15th with the host Warriors taking a 12-2 decision.  Sophomore third baseman Dan Wothers was the lone Philadelphia University player to register more than one hit, totaling with a pair of singles as the Rams were limited to just five hits in the setback.  In its next contest, Heineman's team woke up offensively, pounding out a season-high 24 hits in a 21-3 win over visiting University of the Sciences on April 16th.  Four players registered three hits for Philadelphia University including sophomore first baseman Mike Anderson, who finished with four RBI.  On the mound, freshman right hander Jared Farbman remained perfect on the season at 4-0, allowing just three hits and one unearned run in 5 2/3 innings, striking out ten.  Dominican College came calling in the Rams' next outing, beginning a key three-game Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) series with the Chargers.  The Rams took the opener on April 18th at home by a count of 14-13.  Seniors Jason Hartley and Zach Mentzer picked up three hits apiece in the victory while junior Kyle Noonan's two-run homerun in the bottom of the eighth gave the Rams a lead they would not surrender.  Sophomore John Pugh earned the win in relief, giving Philadelphia University the key league win.  Dominican, back home for the final two games of the series on April 19th, got revenge as they limited the Rams to four runs in the evening doubleheader, winning by margins of 4-2 and 10-2.  Philadelphia University bounced back in their final contest of the week, winning 10-5 at Widener University on April 20th.  Junior Steve Benner earned the victory in relief for the Rams while Mentzer did the job at the plate, going 3 for 5 with a run and three RBI in the triumph.  Heineman and his team will next travel to Chestnut Hill College on Tuesday, April 22nd, for a single game with the Griffins.

GOLF - The Philadelphia University golf team wrapped up the 2007-08 campaign with a pair of outings this past week.  First-year Head Coach Tony Berich's squad took part in the 2008 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship at Back Creek Country Club on April 14th and 15th in Middletown, Del., to open the stretch.  The Rams placed 9th out of 11 teams at the league championship, posting a team score of 738, led by junior co-captain PJ O'Brien with a two-day total of 179.  The season officially concluded for Berich's team on April 18th, when his team finished fourth in a field of six teams at Island Green Country Club in Philadelphia in an event hosted by the University of the Sciences.  O'Brien paced the Rams with an 84 while sophomore Joe Barricelli carded an 86.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE (8-3 overall, 1-2 ECC) - First-year Head Coach Jenn Devinney and her Philadelphia University women's lacrosse team went 1-1 on the week, splitting a pair of road contests.  The Lady Rams opened the two-game stretch at nationally-ranked Adelphi University on April 19th with the host Panthers taking a 20-2 decision in Hempstead, N.Y.  Seniors Shannon Shippey and Marissa Wisniewski each registered one goal for Philadelphia University while sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Staerk collected 16 saves in a losing effort.  Devinney's team got back on the winning track in their next contest, taking a 19-5 victory from Dominican College on April 20th on the road.  Senior Allison Kessler and freshman Michelle O'Hanlon scored four goals apiece in the victory while Shippey added three goals and four assists as the Lady Rams scored the first nine goals of the contest.  Staerk, meanwhile, finished with seven saves in earning her seventh victory of the year.  Philadelphia University will be back on the field on Wednesday, April 23rd, traveling to Chestnut Hill College on a non-conference contest.

SOFTBALL (12-24 overall, 8-10 CACC) - The Philadelphia University softball team got a couple of very impressive individual performances in an eight-game stretch last week, leading to a 4-4 overall record for the Lady Rams.  Things got started in a big way for Head Coach John Kelly's team on April 16th against Goldey-Beacom College.  Senior outfielder Maureen Keenan went 5 for 8 with three runs and three RBI at the plate in the twinbill, helping Philadelphia University to an 11-3 victory and a 20-1 decision.  Fellow senior Jacque Curtis went 4 for 6 at the plate with four runs and four RBI in the two games while also earning her team-high sixth win of the season the mound in the opener.  In the second contest against the Lightning, sophomore left hander Kelly Rauco earned her second victory of the season, allowing just three hits and one unearned run in five innings of work.  Next up, the Lady Rams entertained Nyack College on April 18th, taking both games by scores of 8-0 and 14-0.  Curtis continued her strong hitting, going 7 for 8 with four runs and six RBI in the doubleheader while Keenan went 3 for 4 with three runs, three RBI and a homerun in the second contest.  The Lady Rams then closed the week with four straight road games beginning with a non-conference doubleheader at Molloy College on April 19th.  Unfortunately, the Lady Lions put an end to the Lady Rams' winning streak, taking both games by scores of 9-1 and 3-0.  Curtis had two of the team's four hits in the opener while Molloy limited Kelly's team to five hits in the second contest.  Freshman right hander Randi Wozniak had a solid performance on the mound in the second game, going the distance and allowing two unearned runs in suffering the loss.  Finally, the Lady Rams long week came to an end at Adelphi University on April 20th with the Panthers claiming both contests, 8-4 and 10-7.  Curtis did her best to keep the Lady Rams in the games, going 5 for 7 with four runs, five RBI and two homeruns on the day.  Philadelphia University will look to get back on the winning track when it hosts Chestnut Hill College on Tuesday, April 22nd.

WOMEN'S TENNIS (16-6 overall) - Head Coach Marty Gilbert's regionally-ranked Philadelphia University women's tennis team returned from a 16-day layoff on April 19th, hosting Queens College on the Main Campus Courts.  Unfortunately, the Lady Rams came out on the short end of a 5-4 decision.  Senior Maddie Smith and freshman Adriana Rodriguez each posted perfect 2-0 marks on the day.  Smith picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory at #1 singles while Rodriguez took a 6-4, 6-2 triumph at #3 singles.  The duo then paired for an 8-1 win at #1 doubles, but the Lady Rams came up just short.  Gilbert's team will return to action on Saturday, April 26th, hosting the University of the District of Columbia in a non-conference contest on the road.
