Weekly Ram Report
Seeing just one non-conference matchup remaining on their schedule, Head Coach Herb Magee's men's basketball team probably feels pretty good about their chances entering the latter stages of the 2007-'08 season. Standing at 9-10 overall, the Rams are the lone unblemished team in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) competition, at 6-0 and a full two games clear atop the South Division standings. They are 4-1 so far in 2008, after their 2-0 performance last week, and they have a lengthy six-day break before their next encounter at CACC North Division-leading Post University in Waterbury, Conn. on Saturday, January 26 at 3:00 p.m. The Eagles are 8-8 overall, 5-2 in league action.
It came as no surprise that sophomore forward Malcolm Ingram's two best games of the season led to two Philadelphia University victories. The product of Philadelphia's Solebury Prep put together his finest week-to-date, averaging a double-double with 26 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. Ingram shot a blistering 70.4% (19-27) from the field and 93.3% (14-15) from the free-throw line, well above his season averages of 51.6% (113-219) from the floor and 65% (65-100) from the charity stripe.
Ingram poured in a career-high 26 points and added 12
rebounds as Philadelphia University defeated Chestnut Hill
College 90-52
on Tuesday, January 15 at the Gallagher Center. Ingram
connected on ten of 13 shots from the field to lead the Rams, who
also got 20 points--including six three-point field goals--from
junior guard Mike Dunn and a career-high 12
points from senior forward and team captain Maurice
Martin.
The Rams jumped out to a quick 11-3 lead on a layup by Ingram at
the 13:16 mark and the margin swelled to double-digits shortly
thereafter when Dunn connected on a pair of treys on back-to-back
possessions. After the first 20 minutes of action, Magee's
team took a 36-21 lead behind five of Dunn's long-distance field
goald. In the second half, an efficient Rams' offense and
cold shooting by the visiting Griffins allowed Philadelphia
University to further its lead and come away with the victory, its
second of the season against the Griffins.
Over the weekend, Ingram tied his career effort from earlier in the week when he notched 16 of his game-high 26 points (9-14 FG, 8-9 FT) in the first half, while senior forward Jason Hickenbottom accounted for 16 points (4-5 FG), 10 rebounds and five assists for the Rams as they picked up a 79-66 win at Dominican on Saturday, January 19. Sophomore forward Mike Yocum (14 points, seven boards) and sophomore playmaker Russell Frederick (11 points, 3-5 from downtown Orangeburg, six assists) complemented the top two scorers as the Rams led 8-2 and 22-13 before heading to the locker room with a 42-36 edge. In the second half, Philadelphia jumped out to a 14-point lead with 8:27 to go, but the Chargers were able to cut the lead to nine points with 2:38 left. However, the Rams finished up the game with a 10-6 run en route to the 13-point victory.
Here is a look at how the rest of the varsity athletic teams fared this past week:
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (9-6 overall, 3-4 CACC) - The week started out as a promising one for Head Coach Tom Shirley's women's basketball team, as they registered two key CACC South Division wins over Chestnut Hill at home on Tuesday (68-56) and on the road at Georgian Court (81-60) on Thursday. Those victories evened the Lady Rams' conference ledger at 3-3, but the stay at the .500 mark proved short-lived as they fell at North Division-leading Dominican College on Saturday by a count of 84-65.
One of the big stories of the week was the emergence of redshirt freshman Taylor Magnus. The reserve guard/forward came off the bench to play the most significant minutes of her young career, posting a career-high with 16 points in the win versus Chestnut Hill. She also displayed her two-way effectiveness with an average of 1.7 steals per game in the busy week for the Lady Rams.
In addition, sophomore center Jessica Romano continues to sparkle in the post for the Lady Rams. Romano averaged a double-double for the week at 19 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. For the season, she continues to lead Philadelphia University in both scoring and rebounding with averages of 18.1 ppg and 9.9 rpg.
On the milestone watch, senior forward Ashley Webster enters this week needing just nine points to become the 23rd player in school history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau for her career. Moreover, Webster (785) has surpassed former Lady Ram great Samara Speakes '05 (779) by moving into fifth place on the all-time University list for rebounds.
