Weekly Ram Report

First-year Head Coach Jenn Devinney and her Philadelphia University women's lacrosse team put together a perfect 2-0 mark last week as senior midfielder Maggie Bornhorst etched her name in the school record book.  The Lady Rams got things started with a 17-8 victory over Wilmington University on the road on March 29th, as senior midfielder Marissa Wisniewski tallied two goals and three assists.  Bornhorst and Shippey scored four goals apiece, as the Lady Rams earned the victory in New Castle, Del.  Back at home to close the week, Philadelphia University hosted Bloomsburg University in a key non-conference matchup at Ravenhill Field with the Lady Rams claiming a 13-9 win.  Bornhorst scored four goals to pace Devinney's team, including the 100th goal of her stellar career.  In doing so, Bornhorst becomes just the 11th player in school history to reach the mark and now ranks tenth all-time in school history with 101 career goals.  Sophomore midfielder Kathleen Maurer added a season-high five points in the win over the Huskies, notching three goals and two assists.  In goal, sophomore Kelly Staerk recorded eight saves for her third victory of the season.  The Lady Rams will be back in action on Wednesday, April 2nd, traveling to Kutztown University for a non-league tilt.

Here is a look at how the rest of the varsity athletic teams fared this past week:

BASEBALL (2-12 overall, 1-1 CACC) - Head Coach Mark Heineman and his Philadelphia University baseball team posted a 1-3 record last week including a key split to open the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) season.  The Rams kicked off the stretch by hosting Kutztown University on March 24th with the Golden Bears ultimately prevailing by a 10-1 margin.  Sophomore first baseman Mike Anderson drove home the lone run of the contest for Philadelphia University with an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning that plated senior shortstop Zach Mentzer.  On the mound, freshman Victor Quint had a solid outing in a losing effort, allowing just three hits and one earned run in six strong innings of work for Heineman.  In their next outing on March 26th, the Rams entertained East Stroudsburg University, but it was the visiting Warriors that pulled out the 7-6 victory.  Junior outfield Dan Ellmer went 1 for 3 at the plate with a pair of RBI as the Rams scored four times in the bottom of the ninth, but fell one run short of sending the game to extra frames.  Finally, Philadelphia University closed out the week with a league doubleheader at the University of the Sciences on March 27th.  In the opening game, the host Devils scored all six of their runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, ultimately taking a 6-4 decision despite three hits from Ellmer.  The Rams bounced back in the second contest, however, taking a 7-0 victory behind the pitching of freshman right hander Jared Farbman.  A product of nearby Central High, Farbman allowed just two hits in seven innings of work, earning his second win of the season.  Heineman and his team were originally scheduled to host Millersville University in a non-conference twinbill on March 30th, but that doubleheader was postponed, and the Rams will now return to action on Tuesday, April 1st, hosting Chestnut Hill College.

CREW - The Philadelphia University crew teams took part in the Murphy Cup on March 29th with Head Coach Chris O'Brien's squads faring well in their second contest of the spring season.  The men's varsity 4 had the top performance of the day, winning its heat to advance to the finals.  In the finals, the Rams placed second for the first-ever medal in the program's history.  The women's varsity 4 also qualified for the finals after placing second in its heat, ultimately placing sixth overall.  The women's novice 8 placed second in its heat and narrowly missed advancing to the finals by a mere .04 seconds.  Wrapping up the competition for O'Brien's team was the women's varsity 8, which placed fourth in its heat and missed the finals after suffering equipment problems just 400 meters into the race and having to compete with just seven rowers.  Philadelphia University will be back on the water on Saturday, April 5th, traveling to Oakdale, N.Y., to meet Dowling College.

GOLF - The Philadelphia University golf team played its first contest of the spring season last week, placing third in a quad-match hosted by the Rams at Edgmont Country Club in Edgemont, Pa.  Junior P.J. O'Brien posted a team-best 83 to lead the Rams while fellow juniors Russ Pierson and James Balletto shot 88 and 89, respectively, in the match as Philadelphia University finished with a team total of 356.  First-year Head Coach Tony Berich and his team will be back in action on Friday, April 4th, taking part in quad-match hosted by Holy Family University at Torresdale Frankford Country Club.

SOFTBALL (3-13 overall, 1-3 CACC) - The Lady Rams' softball team picked up its first conference victory last week, finishing their four-game stretch with a 1-3 record.  Head Coach John Kelly and his team opened with a non-conference doubleheader at Shippensburg University on March 25th, with the host Lady Raiders taking both games - 1-0 and 8-0.  In the opener, the teams were scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning when Shippensburg put together back-to-back doubles to plate the winning run.  Senior right hander Jacque Curtis was the hard-luck loser, allowing just four hits and one run in six innings in a losing effort.  In the second game, the Lady Raiders took a 3-0 lead after two innings and cruised to the eventual 8-0 victory.  Kelly and his squad returned home to meet Dominican College on March 29th, where the Lady Rams earned a split with the Chargers.  Senior infielder Janine Becker registered a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one, handing the Lady Rams a 6-5 come-from-behind win.  Sophomore catcher Maggie Desmond went 3 for 4 at the plate for Philadelphia University while Curtis went the distance for her team-high second victory of the season on the mound.  The Chargers, however, took the second contest, 6-2, scoring five times through the first three innings.  Freshman outfielder Jen Richard collected a pair of hits for the Lady Rams, who will travel to Georgian Court University for their next action - at doubleheader on Wednesday, April 2nd.

MEN'S TENNIS (7-7 overall) - Head Coach Marty Gilbert and the Philadelphia University men's tennis team went 2-1 last week, reaching the .500 mark through 14 contests.  Things got off to a good start as the Rams collected an 8-1 win against Chestnut Hill College at home.  Senior Alex Richter picked up a win at #2 singles, 6-1, 6-0, before teaming with freshman Tom McAvoy for an 8-2 triumph at #1 doubles.  The Rams were back in action on March 29th, hosting East Stroudsburg University, where they picked up a key 5-4 win over the visiting Warriors.  After dropping two of three doubles matches, the Rams won four of six singles contests to earn the victory.  In their final contest of the week, the Rams traveled to Bloomsburg University for a non-league battle with the Huskies.  Unfortunately, Bloomsburg prevailed, 8-1, with senior Boo Burnier earning the lone victory for the Rams, a three-set thriller at #4 singles.  The Rams will be back on the courts on Thursday, April 3rd, with a road contest at the University of the Sciences.

WOMEN'S TENNIS (15-5 overall) - It was a 1-1 week for the Philadelphia University women's tennis team, which won at home before falling on the road.  Head Coach Marty Gilbert's squad began the week with a 7-2 win over East Stroudsburg University on March 29th.  Senior Maddie Smith was one of four Lady Rams to register perfect 2-0 records on the day, posting a 6-1, 6-3 victory at #1 singles before teaming with freshman Adriana Rodriguez for an 8-3 triumph at #1 doubles.  In their next match, the Lady Rams took to the road to meet Bloomsburg University on March 30th.  Smith was a perfect 2-0 on the day once again, but it wasn't enough to prevent a 7-2 setback to the Huskies.  Up next for Gilbert and his team is Moravian College at home on Thursday, April 3rd.
