Weekly Ram Report

It was a tale of two stories for the Philadelphia University softball team this past week as the Lady Rams were swept to open the week before taking a key conference doubleheader on the road to close the four-game stretch.  Head Coach John Kelly's team began with a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) twinbill at 16th-ranked Georgian Court University on April 2nd.  In the opener, Philadelphia University jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as sophomore infielder Kristyn Loughery picked up an RBI single.  However, the host Lions scored once in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game before plating the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning, taking a 3-2 decision.  Senior right hander Jacque Curtis had a stellar performance on the mound for the Lady Rams, allowing just two hits and one run in 5 1/3 innings of work.  In the second game with Georgian Court, the Lady Rams scored first again when Curtis registered an RBI double that scored fellow senior Maureen Keenan in the top of the third inning.  However, the Lions scored five unanswered runs, taking a 5-1 decision for the sweep.  Kelly's team bounced back in fine fashion in their next outing, though, sweeping Bloomfield College by scores of 5-0 and 7-3 on April 6th on the road.  Curtis tossed a complete-game shutout in the first game for her team-high third victory of the year, allowing just five hits to go along with five strikeouts.  Sophomore catcher Maggie Desmond went 2 for 3 at the plate with two RBI and a homerun while Curtis also connected on a homerun for Philadelphia University.  In the second game, the Lady Rams jumped out to a 3-0 lead, only to watch the Deacons tie the contest in the bottom of the sixth.  Desmond had some magic left in her bat, however, hitting a three-run homerun in the top of the seventh inning as freshman Randi Wozniak collected her first career collegiate win on the mound.  Wozniak allowed seven hits and registered six strikeouts in seven innings for Kelly, as the Lady Rams improve to 5-15 overall and 3-5 in the CACC.  Philadelphia University will look to extend its winning streak when it hosts Wilmington University on Tuesday, April 8th.

Here is a look at how the rest of the varsity athletic teams fared this past week:

BASEBALL (3-13 overall, 1-1 CACC) - The Philadelphia University baseball team went 1-1 in a rain-shortened week, led by sophomore infielder Tyler Mentzer.  Head Coach Mark Heineman's team began the stretch with a 7-6 loss at Bloomfield College on April 3rd, with the Rams rallying for five runs in the top of the ninth inning, but falling just short.  Mentzer provided the big blow in the contest with a grand slam that pulled Philadelphia University within two runs at 7-5, but it wasn't to be.  The Gettysburg, Pa., native finished the contest 2 for 5 with a run and four RBI in a losing effort.  Heineman's squad bounced back in its next outing, however, taking a 5-4 decision from Post University on April 4th at home.  Junior Rob Fisher and freshman Anthony DiFrancesco each collected a pair of hits in the victory while Mentzer connected on his second homerun in as many days, a solo shot in the bottom of the first inning.  Fisher also earned the win on the mound in relief, tossing two perfect innings including striking out the side in the top of the ninth to seal the win.  The winning run came on an RBI singles off the bat of senior outfielder JungMin Lee in the bottom of the eighth that plated DiFrancesco.  The Rams then saw two conference doubleheaders - at Post University on April 5th and at home against Wilmington University on April 6th - postponed due to heavy rain.  The Rams will be back in action on Tuesday, April 8th, traveling to Caldwell College for a key league contest with the Cougars.

GOLF - First-year Head Coach Tony Berich and his Philadelphia University golf team had their lone match of the week - a quad-match hosted by Holy Family University at Torresdale Frankford Country Club on April 4th -- postponed due to inclement weather.  The Rams will now kick off a busy week of action on Monday, April 7th, traveling to Caldwell, N.J., for a quad-match hosted by CACC foe Caldwell College.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE (4-2 overall, 1-1 ECC) - It was a .500 week for the Philadelphia University women's lacrosse team, which registered a key non-league win on the road before falling at home to cap the week.  First-year Head Coach Jen Devinney's team opened play with a 23-7 win at Kutztown University on April 2nd as senior midfielders Brooke Woodland and Marissa Wisniewski tallied five goals apiece.  Fellow senior Maggie Bornhorst added four goals for the Lady Rams, who also got two goals and two assists from senior Shannon Shippey.  In their next outing, however, the Lady Rams fell at home to East Coast Conference (ECC) foe Molloy College on April 5th at Ravenhill Field, dropping a 12-11 decision.  Wisniewski finished with four goals and Bornhorst added three goals and one assist as the Lady Rams saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.  Devinney and her squad will look to get back on the winning track when they travel to Georgian Court University on Thursday, April 10th.

MEN'S TENNIS (8-7 overall) - The Philadelphia University men's tennis team registered a win in its only match of the week, taking an important 6-3 decision from the University of the Sciences on the road on April 3rd.  Freshman Kyle Kaltenbacher had a stellar performance for the Rams, who are ranked eighth in the latest NCAA East Region Poll.  Kaltenbacher picked up a 6-4, 6-1 victory at #1 singles while also earning a key 8-7 decision at #1 doubles with senior Anders Novesky.  Senior Boo Burnier and freshman Seppi Hutter also had perfect 2-0 marks for the day for the Rams, who have won three of their past four contests.  A non-conference matchup with Millersville University on April 6th at home was postponed due to rain so the Rams next contest will take place on Friday, April 11th, at Chestnut Hill College.

WOMEN'S TENNIS (16-5 overall) - Head Coach Marty Gilbert's Philadelphia University women's tennis team won its lone contest of the week, taking a 5-4 decision from visiting Moravian College on April 3rd.  Record-setting senior Maddie Smith had an outstanding day in leading the Lady Rams to the win, posting a 6-0, 6-2 victory at #1 singles before teaming with freshman Adriana Rodriguez for a convincing 8-1 triumph at #1 doubles.  Smith now has a single-season school record 42 wins this season for Philadelphia University, which will be back in action on Saturday, April 19th, hosting Queens College in a key non-conference matchup at the Main Campus Courts.
