Weekly Ram Report
Head Coach Herb Magee's men's basketball team began
the week staring at a zero in the win column and a five in the loss
column. After their two games last Thursday and Saturday,
including their conference opener, the Rams now own a 2-5 overall
mark and are 1-0 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference
(CACC). Last Thursday, November 29th at the Gallagher Center,
four players scored in double-figures for Philadelphia University,
helping the Rams to a 77-58 victory over West Chester
University.
Junior guard Mike Dunn scored 17 of his team-high 19 points in the
opening half as the Rams opened up a 37-28 advantage after 20
minutes of play. Dunn's first-half performance included
shooting 6 of 7 from the field with five three-point field
goals. In the second half, it was senior forward Jason
Hickenbottom's turn to lead the Rams, as he scored 16 of his 18
points in the second frame. In addition to Dunn and
Hickenbottom, sophomore point guard Russell Frederick added 14
points, nine assists and five boards while fellow sophomore Malcolm
Ingram added 13 points while battling foul trouble all game.
And then at the Palestra in Philadelphia, Coach Magee's team held
off a furious late rally by the Wilmington Wildcats on Saturday
afternoon, December 1st, to earn a 65-61 win in both teams' CACC
opener.
Philadelphia University opened up a 34-26 halftime
lead on Russell Frederick's 4-5 first-half shooting from the field
and 4-6 from the free-throw line. Frederick finished the
contest with a game-high 19 points to go along with eight assists,
five rebounds and four steals as the sophomore guard turned in
another solid performance. Sophomore forward Malcolm Ingram
contributed a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards, and
junior guard Mike Dunn nailed four three-pointers for 12 total
points while playing the entire 40 minutes.
The Wildcats trailed by as many as 14 points in the second half,
and were down 12 with six minutes remaining, before going on a 12-2
run to cut the Rams' lead to two with just over a minute to
go. That's when sophomore transfer forward Marcus Lemon
casually knocked down four straight foul shots in the closing
seconds of play to seal the four-point decision for Philadelphia
University.
Coach Magee's team continues its conference slate
on Monday night, December 3rd at cross-town rival Holy Family
University at 8:00 p.m., following Tom Shirley's women's basketball
team's game vs. the Tigers which tips-off the doubleheader at 6:00
p.m. in Northeast Philadelphia. Then at the Gallagher Center,
the men host Cheyney University for a non-conference encounter on
Wednesday, December 5th, before closing the week at home on
Saturday, December 8th in a conference game against Nyack College
at 2:30 p.m.
Here is a look at how the rest of the varsity athletic teams fared this past week:
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (3-1 overall, 0-0 CACC) -
Freshman forward Ashley Gaskins grabbed an offensive rebound and
scored on a put-back with 1.5 seconds remaining, leading
Philadelphia University to a 74-73 win at East Stroudsburg
University on Wednesday, November 28th, in the women's basketball
team's lone game of the week. In the opening frame of the
contest, Head Coach Tom Shirley's squad jumped out to an early 21-9
advantage behind the scoring of sisters Kate Brennan and Amanda
Brennan. Kate, a redshirt freshman forward, scored 11 during
the opening run while Amanda, a junior guard, added seven.
East Stroudsburg battled back with an 8-0 run to close the gap, but
the Lady Rams maintained a 43-33 advantage at the half.
In the second stanza, Shirley's team maintained the lead for the
first 18:01, holding a 66-59 advantage with just over six minutes
remaining in regulation. However, the Warriors put together
one last rally, tying the contest with 1:09 left and eventually
taking the lead, 73-72, on a pair of free throws with 12 seconds
left. Following a timeout, Amanda Brennan drove the baseline
for the Lady Rams, missing a layup attempt while senior Ashley
Webster grabbed an offensive rebound, but also missed.
Gaskins then gathered the loose ball and scored the eventual
game-winning basket, helping Philadelphia University avenge a loss
to the Warriors from last season. East Stroudsburg still had
1.5 seconds left on the clock, but was unable to get off a shot
against the Lady Rams' pressure defense.
Kate Brennan led all scorers with 23 points while Webster added her
third double-double in four games this season, finishing with 17
points and 11 boards. Sophomore center Jessica Romano also
collected a double-double, adding 15 points and 13 rebounds before
fouling out with 1:59 remaining.
Looking ahead to the upcoming week, three games are on tap for the
Lady Rams, beginning Monday night at 6:00 p.m. at Holy Family
University for their first CACC matchup in 2007-'08. The
Tigers come into the game ranked #24 in the latest USA
Today/ESPN Division II women's basketball poll, with a record
of 5-0 that includes a 1-0 mark in the league. Then on
Thursday, December 6th at 6:00 p.m. at the Gallagher Center, the
Lady Rams host the Bloomfield College Deacons in a game that will
not count towards to the conference standings, before closing out
the week at home on Saturday, December 8th in a CACC tilt at 12:30
p.m. with the visiting Nyack College Lady Warriors.
