Weekly Ram Report
The Philadelphia University men's basketball team put together a solid 2-1 mark last week, improving to 4-6 overall on the season including a perfect 3-0 record in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). The opening contest of the week for Head Coach Herb Magee's squad was a key road trip to CACC foe Holy Family University on December 3rd where the Rams came away with a 52-47 victory. Senior forward Jason Hickenbottom continued his stellar start to the 2007-08 campaign by leading the Rams with 19 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out in the final minute of the contest. Up next for Magee's team was non-league foe Cheyney University on December 5th, but it was the visiting Wolves that came away with the last-second decision. Philadelphia University held a three-point lead in the final seconds of regulation before Cheyney tied the contest with a long three-pointer with just three seconds remaining to tie the contest. In overtime, the Wolves scored on a tip-in at the buzzer, giving them a 58-56 victory despite 15 points from Rams' junior guard Mike Dunn and 13 points and five assists from sophomore point guard Russell Frederick. The Rams got back in the win column in their final contest of the week, taking a 65-45 decision from visiting Nyack College on December 8th. Sophomore forward Malcolm Ingram led all scorers with 17 points as the Rams battled back from a 27-24 deficit at the half, limiting the Warriors to just 18 second-half points. Hickenbottom and Dunn added 14 points apiece in the triumph while Frederick, the reigning CACC Player of the Week, turned in another outstanding performance with 13 points, seven assists and four steals. The Rams will continue their current four-game home stand on Wednesday, December 12th, when they host UMass Lowell in a non-league tilt at the Gallagher Center.
Here is a look at how the rest of the varsity athletic teams fared this past week:
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (4-3 overall, 1-1 CACC) - A
tough week for the Philadelphia University women's basketball team
ended on a positive note as the Lady Rams won their final contest
of the three-game stretch, finishing with a 1-2 record. Head
Coach Tom Shirley and his team began the week with a 71-48 loss at
Holy Family University on December 3rd. Senior forward Ashley
Webster topped the team with 14 points while sophomore center
Jessica Romano added 11 points and 13 rebounds in a losing
effort. Things didn't get any easier for the Lady Rams in
their next outing, a non-conference contest with Bloomfield College
on December 6th at home. Romano led all scorers with 26
points while Webster added 21 points and ten boards, but it wasn't
enough to prevent an 80-70 loss to the Deacons. Shirley's
team bounced back in their final effort of the week, however,
posting a 77-38 win over visiting Nyack College on December
8th. Romano was the game's high-scorer with 21 points in the
victory while junior guard Amanda Brennan capped a solid week
offensively, finishing with 14 points. Shirley and his squad
will have one week off, returning to action on Saturday, December
15th, at Molloy College.
