Weekly Ram Report
Head Coach Tom Shirley and his Philadelphia University women's basketball team split a pair of contests over the holiday break including a key non-conference win at home to close out the 2007 calendar year. The Lady Rams got things started on December 21st at home, hosting Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foe Wilmington University. Unfortunately, it was the visiting Wildcats that prevailed, 83-71. Sophomore center Jessica Romano led the way in a losing effort for Philadelphia University with 18 points and 15 rebounds while junior guard Amanda Brennan added 18 points as well. Shirley's squad got back on the winning track in its next outing, however, taking a 63-51 decision from visiting Kutztown University on December 29th. Senior forward Ashley Webster and freshman forward Kate Brennan finished with 15 points apiece to lead the Lady Rams, who improved to 6-4 overall (1-2 CACC) with the triumph. Philadelphia University will be back in action on Monday, January 7th when it travels to league foe Bloomfield College.
Here is a look at how the rest of the varsity athletic teams fared this past week:
MEN'S BASKETBALL (5-9 overall, 3-0 CACC) - A busy holiday schedule for the Philadelphia University men's basketball team resulted in a 1-2 mark for the Rams. Head Coach Herb Magee's team opened the stretch with an 84-44 win over Chestnut Hill College on December 19th at home. Sophomore forward Malcolm Ingram led all scorers with 19 points, adding 12 boards, while fellow sophomore Marcus Lemon, making his first career start for the Rams, added a career-high 17 points. Also finding double-figure scoring for Magee was sophomore point guard Russell Frederick with 16 points and junior guard Mike Dunn with 11 points. Following a nine-day layoff, the Rams were back in action on December 28th, meeting Assumption (Mass.) College in the first round of the Bryant (R.I.) University Holiday Classic. However, Philadelphia University's attempt to avenge an earlier season loss to the Greyhounds came up one point short as it fell 60-59. Ingram recorded his second straight double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds with senior forward Jason Hickenbottom also contributing 19 points. The Rams wrapped up the tournament with a 61-53 loss to the host Bulldogs on December 29th. Lemon came off the bench to post a team-high 13 points while Hickenbottom and Frederick added 12 points and 11 points, respectively. Philadelphia University will look to snap its two-game slide when it travels to Bloomfield College on Monday, January 7th for a key league battle with the Deacons.
