Magee and Woodland Honored by Philadelphia SportsWriters Association

Men's Basketball Head Coach Herb Magee '63 (pictured at the podium on Mon.) and two-sport student-athlete Brooke Woodland '08 were among the honorees at the prestigious Philadelphia Sports Writers Association (PSWA) Awards Dinner on Jan. 28, 2008 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cherry Hill, N.J.

Magee, who last February became the winningest Division II coach in NCAA history, received the association's Special Achievement Award.  Woodland, a lacrosse and field hockey player who recently overcame a ligament injury, was honored with a number of student-athletes lauded for their outstanding skills and abilities.

"It was gratifying to be recognized by the Philadelphia SportsWriters Association in my hometown," said Magee, whose team currently stands undefeated in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC).  Woodland was subsequently featured in suburban editions of the Philadelphia Inquirer on Thurs., Jan. 31 where she said, "I was blown away by the award."  After graduating in May, Woodland will continue her education in the University's Occupational Therapy graduate program in the fall.

Held annually, the 104th PSWA dinner recognizes the athletic accomplishments of local sports figures.  It is the oldest event of its kind in the nation.  This year, the association also spotlighted Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins, Eagles offensive tackle Jon Runyan and Flyers player Daniel Briere, among many other notable Philadelphia-area sports figures.  Other highlights of the event were a book signing and a silent auction.
