Norristown, O'Hara, Little Flower and Nazareth Victorious in Quaker City Tournament

In a fitting way to begin the Holiday season today at the Gallagher Center on the East Falls campus of Philadelphia University, the Quaker City Tournament celebrated women's sports along with raising funds and awareness for good causes in the City of Brotherly Love.  It all started this morning when eminent sportscaster Don Tollefson hosted "The Other Side of Sports" radio program on SportsRadio 950-AM from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.  Athletic Director and women's basketball Head Coach Tom Shirley joined Tollefson for most of the show, which discussed among other topics the growth of women's sports during both men's esteemed careers.

Tollefson's work as president of One Child Saved was also talked about in detail during the broadcast, and the proceeds from today's tournament will be directed towards the charitable organization which has enabled tens-of-thousands of disadvantaged youngsters to learn team-building skills, anti-hatred and anti-violence strategies and create personal educational and career plans and pathways.

In addition, the sixth-grade children from St. Helena School in Blue Bell, Pa. pitched in by running the concession stand at the quadruple-header, raising funds for both One Child Saved and the Retired Sisters of Mercy.

The main events of the day were the four Philadelphia city-suburban girls high-school basketball games.  Here are the results and summaries from all four games:

Recap:
The Sentinels led 16-5 after a defense-oriented first half, but the Royal Lancers came back in the third quarter, cutting the Little Flower margin to nine going into the final period.  But the perfect free-throw shooting (4-4, 100%) of senior guard Jackie Thomas in the fourth quarter kept Bishop McDevitt at bay as the Sentinels went on to notch a 38-22 win in Game 2 of the Quaker City Tournament.  Game MVP Jamie Shackles finished with eight points for Little Flower.

Central Bucks East came out strong, taking a 10-3 lead after one quarter, due in large part to the outside shooting of junior guard Jaime Donovan.  But Nazareth persisted and began to work an effective inside game, and combined with a relentless Fighting Pandas' defense, the Patriots found themselves down 18-14 at the half.  Game MVP Carleigh Brown scored seven of her game-high 13 points in the fourth quarter, and Nazareth came away with a 42-36 win in Game 3 of the Quaker City Tournament.
