Philadelphia University Participates in NCAA Leadership Academy

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The NCAA National Leadership Academy provides NCAA student-athletes with a forum to openly discuss issues that may affect them on their campuses and in their communities, while also providing them with the opportunity to enhance their leadership, communication, decision making and problem-solving skills over the span of five days.
This year Nicholas White, soccer, and Melissa Hess, Field Hockey (both pictured below), along with Faculty Athletic Representative Professor Steven Frumkin (shown at right with members of the women's tennis team) represented Philadelphia University, along with over 300 other Division II delegates here in Philadelphia, from February 15 through 17, 2008.
The conference is an outreach of the successful CHAMPS/Life Skills Program and involves close to 325 student-athletes each year who compete in fall, winter and spring sports in Divisions I, II and III. Many of the student-athletes who participate are members of their conference and campus Student-Athlete Advisory Committees (SAACs). Each NCAA member institution that has a CHAMPS/Life Skills Program is encouraged to nominate student-athletes from their campus for the annual leadership conference.
The Academy conducts seminars in a collaborative manner where the participants:
- learn about, develop and apply leadership skills
- gain insight into their personal styles through self assessment and peer feedback
- become better acquainted with NCAA and Division II structures and initiatives
- work collaboratively with their School Teams to develop and implement action plans that create positive change.
Hess and White will present their Action Plan at the next SAAC meeting and hope to have the SAAC representatives work with them to activate the plan.
