"Think Pink" on Feb. 9 to Support the Rams and Raise Awareness of Breast Cancer

The color normally associated with the February holiday named for St. Valentine may indeed be red, but Philadelphia University and the Department of Athletics are asking all supporters of Rams' basketball to "Think Pink" this month, especially a week from Saturday at the Gallagher Center.

The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's/women's basketball doubleheader between Holy Family University and Philadelphia University begins at 12noon on Sat. Feb. 9, and a host of special events are in store as the Rams and Lady Rams take on their cross-town rival Tigers.

The men's game leads off the day, and it has been chosen as NCAA Productions' Division II National Television Game of the Week.  This is the first time in University history that the Rams will appear on national television.  The men's team is currently ranked eighth in the NCAA Division II Northeast region, just ahead of the ninth-rated Tigers.  This is the second matchup of the season for the CACC South Division foes, as the Rams defeated the Tigers 52-47 on Dec. 3, 2007.  At the moment, Philadelphia University leads the CACC South Division with an unblemished league record of 8-0 while Holy Family is second with a 7-3 mark in conference play.

CSTV will televise the game--locally on Comcast Ch. 274, DirecTV Ch. 610 and Dish Network Ch. 152--and it will be simulcast on their broadband network as well.  Justin Kutcher will handle the play-by-play chores while Vince Curran, a former All-City and All-Catholic basketball player from St. Joseph's Prep who went on to play collegiately at Penn, will provide color commentary.

Audio for the women's game which follows at 2:30 p.m. can be heard for free on Teamline and the Internet video broadcast can be seen for a small pay-per-view fee at CACC.tv, a service provided by Penn Atlantic.  Rams' play-by-play man Josh Hakala will have the live call of the rematch between the Lady Rams and the Tigers, who are top-ranked in the latest Division II Northeast region women's basketball poll.  Back on Dec. 3, 2007, host Holy Family downed Philadelphia University 71-48 in the CACC opener for the Lady Rams.

Those tuning in to watch the games may notice some unfamiliar attire donned by Philadelphia University fans, staff and players.  The Rams and Lady Rams are asking all attendees on Sat. Feb. 9 to wear pink to show their support of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) initiative to "Think Pink" to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.  Let's reach beyond the court and into our schools and communities to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer. We can all be a part of finding a cure.

Also, it's Take-a-Kid-to-the-Game day, as Philadelphia University becomes one of over 700 institutions to take part in the grass roots program--now in its 13th season--that encourages almuni, faculty, staff, fans and adults in the community to take their kids to stadiums and arenas to experience the game-day atmosphere of intercollegiate athletics.  There will be free face painting, activities, refreshments, giveaways, mascot appearances, contests and more for all youngsters in attendance.

Furthermore at next Saturday's twinbill, the University will formally recognize the student-athletes participating in fall sports who earned a place on the Academic Honor Roll for their performance last semester.

There will also be a gathering of basketball parents and alumni hosted by Philadelphia University President Stephen Spinelli Jr., Ph.D. in the Gallagher Center's hospitality suite.

So be sure to mark your calendar, gather your family, assemble your pink wardrobe and prime your vocal cords to cheer the Rams and Lady Rams on to victory next Saturday, February 9, 2008.

Admission is just $5 for adults, $3 for children and FREE for kids 10 and under!
