Zach and Tyler Mentzer Named CACC First-Team All-Conference, Kyle Noonan Tabbed Second-Team, Mark Heineman Selected Top Coach
Senior shortstop Zach Mentzer and sophomore second baseman Tyler Mentzer were named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) All-Conference on Thursday, with both brothers earning first-team recognition. In addition the the Mentzer duo, junior right hander Kyle Noonan was selected to the CACC second-team as the Rams went 21-20 in the regular season and clinched a berth in the 2008 CACC Tournament.
The elder Mentzer, Zach, was a second-team All-Conference pick last season at shortstop and showed no signs of letting up as a senior. A starter in all 41 games, the Gettysburg, Pa., native is hitting .275 with a team-high 31 runs scored. He also ranks second on the team with 42 hits and third with 20 RBI. Mentzer has also made his mark as a clutch reliever for the Rams this spring, posting a 1-0 record with two saves and a 0.00 ERA in six appearances. His victory came in the team's 3-2 win at Post University on May 5th in the regular-season finale, throwing two scoreless innings of relief as the Rams clinched the top seed in the CACC Tournament, set to begin on Thursday, May 8th.
Tyler Mentzer, meanwhile, had an outstanding sophomore campaign,
leading the team in nearly every offensive category. Through
41 games, he hit a team-best .360 while his 54 hits and 40 RBI also
topped the Rams. A CACC second-team All-Conference pick as a
relief pitcher as a true freshman last year, Mentzer also leads the
team with 13 doubles, three triples and four homeruns.
Rounding out the Rams' trio of All-Conference selections is Noonan,
a hard-throwing right hander who garnered second-team
accolades. The Morristown (N.J.) High product posted a 4-3
record for Philadelphia University, tossing a team-high 61 1/3
innings with four complete games in 11 appearances. His 3.38
ERA is tied for tops on the team while his 44 strikeouts is also
tied for the top total on the Rams.
Head Coach Mark Heineman was also recognized by the coaches of the CACC as he was tabbed Coach of the Year. Heineman led the Rams to a 21-20 overall record including a 19-8 conference mark that was tied for first place with Caldwell College. This came after Heineman's team opened the year with a 1-11 record, but saw them close the season with 20 victories in their final 29 games.
Three other Rams -- senior catcher Jason Hartley, senior outfielder JungMin Lee and freshman pitcher Jared Farbman -- were CACC honorable mention All-Conference selections. In addition to individual honors, the Rams were also given the Sportsmanship Award from the CACC coaches.
