Baseball Tumbles 12-7 at West Chester in Non-Conference Play
West Chester, PA- The Philadelphia University Rams baseball squad (1-6) fell 12-7 in a non-conference single game vs. the West Chester Golden Rams (7-7) on Tuesday afternoon. Junior shortstop Tyler Mentzer (Gettysburg, PA/ Delone Catholic) led the Rams with an RBI double- PhilaU's only extra-base knock.
PhilaU scored in the first on junior Rob Fisher's (Langhorne, PA/ Archbishop Ryan) RBI single, and the squad added two more unearned runs in the second inning to mount an early 3-0 lead.
WCU broke their silence in the second with one run, as the Golden Ram's Joe Wendle stole home on a fielding error. Another WCU run was scored in the fourth inning with bases loaded on a wild pitch by PhilaU's freshman Garrett Buehler (Harleysville, PA/ Souderton). Buehler gave up 10 hits in 4.2 innings for the Rams on the day.
PhilaU gave up four unearned runs in the fifth, and one earned to go down 7-3, but Ram's senior catcher Jason Hartley (Levittown, PA/ Neshaminy) got a WCU runner out stealing second to end the inning.
The Ram's troubles continued into the sixth stanza as WCU scored four runs, including a three-run homer to fall behind 11-3. Yet, PhilaU bounced back in the top of the seventh scoring four runs to make it 11-7, helped by Mentzer's double and junior Mike Anderson's (Waldwick, NJ/ Waldwick) single to left field.
The Golden Rams added one more score in the bottom of the seventh inning, and PhilaU could not recover as they suffered a 12-7 loss, their sixth straight.
