Baseball Drops the Ball 4-0, 6-2 vs. Merrimack

Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University baseball team (3-11, 0-1 CACC) knocked out just four hits in two games as they dropped a doubleheader to the Merrimack College Warriors (8-4) on Friday afternoon.  The Ram's fell 4-0 in game one and lost 6-2 in a 12-inning second game. 

In the first game of the day, MC pitcher Chris Pinette threw a no-hitter as he allowed no hits or runs in seven complete innings against the Rams.  The Warriors tacked on two runs in the third inning on a Jeff Bercume homer, and added another score in both the sixth and seventh to complete the 4-0 victory.  PhilaU freshman hurler Garrett Buehler (Harleysville, PA/ Souderton) allowed six hits and four runs in 6.1 innings for the Rams. 

The second game of the day went into 12 innings as MC scored two runs on three errors to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.  PhilaU responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth as junior shortstop Tyler Mentzer (Gettysburg, PA/ Delone Catholic) nailed a triple to score junior infielder Dan Wothers (Pennsburg, PA/ Upper Perkiomen) to close the gap and junior outfielder Mike Anderson (Waldwick, NJ/ Waldwick) hit an RBI single to tie it at 2 apiece.

Both teams would remain scoreless for eight long innings until the Warriors exploded for four runs off four hits in the top of the 12th inning and shut down the Rams 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning to seal a 6-2 win.

PhilaU losing junior pitcher John Pugh (Coatesville, PA/ Coatesville) went eight innings and allowed 10 hits and four runs, while senior hurler Jason Hartley (Levittown, PA/ Neshaminy) went four innings and allowed four hits and two runs for the Rams.  MC's winning pitcher Chris Caron allowed two runs in five innings for the Warriors.

The Rams return to action tomorrow, March 21st in a single game vs. Merrimack at 12:00 p.m. at Alumni Field.
