Philadelphia, PA- A seven-run first inning by the Merrimack College Warriors (9-4) put away the Philadelphia University baseball team (3-12, 0-1 CACC) 16-3 in a non-conference single game on Saturday afternoon. The loss completed a three-game sweep of PhilaU by the Warriors.
The first inning was forgettable for the Rams, as sophomore pitcher Jared Farbman (Philadelphia, PA/ Central) allowed five runs off five hits in just .2 innings pitched as the Warriors took a 5-0 lead. Senior pitcher Mark Pierfy (Trenton, NJ/ Nottingham) came in to relieve Farbman and gave up a two-RBI triple before getting a strikeout to end the inning with PhilaU trailing 7-0.
MC added another run in the top of the second, but PhilaU struck back in the bottom of the inning as freshman pitcher/infielder Garrett Buehler (Harleysville, PA/ Souderton) smacked a two-run single to make it 8-2.
Alas, the Warriors did not slow down adding three runs in both the fourth and the sixth to take a 14-2 lead, adding a run in the seventh and a solo homer in the eight to complete their offense.
PhilaU got on the board in the ninth inning as junior infielder Dan Wothers (Pennsburg, PA/ Upper Perkiomen) scored on a passed ball, but that would be it as MC took a 16-3 road win over the Rams.
The Rams return to action tomorrow, March 22nd for a doubleheader vs. St. Thomas Aquinas College at Alumni Field, beginning at noon.
