2008-09 Baseball Season Highlights
Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University baseball team wrapped up their 2008-09 campaign on a 5-1 winning streak, including a season-ending 3-2 victory over Bloomfield College. The team held a 17-27 overall record, 14-13 CACC.
Junior shortstop Tyler Mentzer (Gettysburg, PA/ Delone Catholic) was named to the Daktronics East-Region Second Team as well as the CACC All-Conference First Team. Mentzer was consistent for the Rams throughout the season, ranking 15th in the CACC in batting average (.344), 6th in hits (42), 7th in total bases (56) and was 13-14 in stolen base attempts.
Other post-season honorees included senior outfielder Dan Ellmer (Trenton, NJ/ Nottingham) and junior pitcher Brian Rousseau (Wantagh, NY/ Wantagh) who were named to the CACC All-Conference Second Team, while sophomore pitcher Jared Farbman (Philadelphia, PA/ Central) earned All-Conference ‘Honorable Mention'.
The team's biggest wins of the year included two home victories over eventual CACC Tournament champions and NCAA Tournament qualifiers Wilmington University. The Rams also took CACC regular-season champion Dominican College to 11 innings in a 2-1 loss.
The start of the 2009-10 season will be a new chapter for PhilaU, as former head coach Mark Heineman resigned at the conclusion of the 2008-09 campaign. The search for a new coach is in the process.
