Baseball 2011 Season Highlights
Philadelphia, PA – The Philadelphia University baseball team finished a tough season with a final record of 5-34 and 3-17 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). They ended their season with a split double-header against Chestnut Hill where they ended the chances of the Griffins advancing to the conference playoffs.
Leading the Rams on the field this year was senior shortstop and team captain Anthony DiFrancesco. After appearing in 38 games for the Rams, he finished with a .309 average at the plate leading the team in runs with 26 and hits with 46. He also recorded the team high RBIs with 27 and homeruns with six. The CACC named DiFrancesco 'Player of the Week' on 3/30 after hitting the game-winning homer in the rop of the ninth inning in a 6-5 win over Bloomfield (3/26).
Finishing his rookie season this year was freshman outfielder Rick Reigner who drove in 17 RBIs with 13 runs and 43 hits.
Senior Kevin McGovern was notable on the mound for PhilaU in 2011 claiming three of the five wins for the Rams this season. Highlights for the senior pitcher include wins over Chestnut Hill (5/3) and the University of the Sciences (4/3). In his 12 appearances on the rubber, he tallied 72 strikeouts.
The team welcomed an all new coaching staff this season with Pat Horvath taking the lead coaching position. Horvath commemorated his first NCAA win with a 6-5 victory over St. Michael's College in West Palm Beach, FL. He has been supported by his assistant coaches Darron Lattomus, Pete Fischer and Miles Miller.
Rams baseball is set to kickoff their 2012 season on February 25th as they travel to Dowling College.
