PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Philadelphia University baseball team ended its 2012 campaign with a 9-3 loss to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foe Wilmington (Del.) Wednesday afternoon on Alumni Field.
First baseman Jordan Force, left fielder Ken McCormick, catcher Stephen Uhlak and shortstop Kyle DeGennaro had one hit a piece for Philadelphia (11-33, 5-15 CACC) in the finale. Force's hit was a RBI double that came with two outs in the bottom of the eighth.
The Rams took advantage of two Wildcat errors to push their first two runs across in the bottom of the fifth. Uhlak reached base with a two-single and advanced 90 feet when second baseman Matt Ruggieri drew a walk. They both moved up a base after Wilmington catcher Matt Lopes' pick-off throw behind Ruggieri ended up in right field. Both players scored when shortstop Jonathan Rodriguez picked up a grounded hit by designated hitter Joe Thayres and threw it out-of-play.
Third baseman BJ Janney went 4-for-6 at the plate, including a RBI single in a three-run sixth and a RBI double in the ninth, the lead the 13-hit Wilmington (29-16, 14-6 CACC) attack.
Second baseman Frank Samluk had a 2-for-4 day and knocked in three runs, while designated hitter Adam Soley recorded two hits. Right fielder and closer Jordan Oncay had a two-run double as part of a three-run top of the first inning.
Justin DeLong struck out nine batters over 7.2 innings of work to earn the victory for Wilmington. He allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits. Oncay threw a perfect 1.1 innings, including getting out of a bases-loaded jam with two outs that he inherited, to record the save.
Sawyer Brown went 5.1 innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and fanned four in a losing effort.
