HOUSTON – Former Rams' baseball player Fernando Garza ('16) was named the 2017 Pecos League Pacific Division Hitter of the Year by the Pecos League, a professional independent baseball league.
Garza, a second baseman for the Tucson Saguaros in the 12-team, two-division (Pacific and Mountain) league, hit .388 (82-for-211) with 33 extra base hits including 17 doubles, two triples and 14 home runs. Garza also recorded 69 runs batters in, good for third across the league. Following the conclusion of the Saguaros' season, Garza went to Salina Stockade in the American Association, a professional independent league, where he was a starter for the second half of the season.
In the spring of 2016, his last season with the Rams in Philadelphia, Garza was named an All-American by three different organizations. The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) named Garza to the Rawlings Division II second team, while the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) tabbed him for the third team.
The All-American accolades capped the list of Garza's 2016 postseason awards that included ABCA/Rawlings East Region Co-Player of the Year, D2CCA Baseball All-East Region first team, NCBWA All-East Region first team and the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player of the Year.
In the final at-bat of his career, Garza recorded his 200th career hit, and 152nd with the Rams, coming as a two-run home run in the eighth inning of a CACC Championship game against Felician on May 14, 2016.
