Assistant Coach Steve Larson

Steve Larson enters his second season as pitching coach for the Philadelphia University baseball program, following three years at the same post for Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa.  Larson has extensive collegiate coaching experience, as exhibited by his eight-year stint as the pitching coach at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, prior to his work at Ursinus.

In his first year with the Rams, Larson oversaw a vast improvement in the pitching staff, including lowering the team ERA from 8.97 in 2006 to 6.78 in 2007 and improving the team's command ratio (K to BB) from .914 to 1.33.  In addition, freshman pitcher Tyler Mentzer received Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) second-team All-Conference honors in 2007 under his tutelage.

While coaching at Ursinus, Steve helped lead the Bears to the Centennial Conference playoffs in two out of three seasons and at Grinnell College, he guided the Pioneers to their first Midwest Conference Southern Division Championship in 2000.  Larson has been instrumental in teaching the game as well, facilitating hundreds of baseball clinics and offering individual pitching instruction to all ages while he has also been involved in baseball as a player and coach for over 30 years.

Larson was an outstanding left-handed pitcher at Kent-Meridian High School in Kent, Wash., earning MVP and Pitcher of the Year accolades.  He was nationally recruited for baseball by NCAA Division I, II and III schools and attended Washington State University in Pullman, Wash.

Steve currently works full-time at Ursinus as the Associate Dean of Students and Director of Residence Life, serving in higher education for over 18 years.  Raised in Alaska, he finished high school, college and graduate school in the state of Washington.  He has a bachelor's degree in environmental science and a master's degree in higher education.   Larson resides in Collegeville, Pa. with his two children, Bailee and Riley.
