Philadelphia University Drops NCAA Division II Field Hockey
Philadelphia, PA- Philadelphia University Director of Athletics Tom Shirley announced today that the Philadelphia University women's field hockey program will be discontinued as an intercollegiate sport, effective immediately.
"We thoroughly examined all possible options and sought to identify opportunities to strengthen the program. Unfortunately, the number of field hockey teams playing at the Division II level continues to decrease and there are not any field hockey programs in our athletic conference, the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CAC), or the Eastern Collegiate Conference, which makes it extremely difficult to field a competitive NCAA program," said Shirley.
Shirley met with the field hockey student-athletes to announce the decision today, along with Dr. Mark Govoni- Dean of Students and Lynn Tubman, Associate Director of Athletics.
Field hockey student- athletes were informed that all athletic scholarships will be honored as per NCAA regulations and potential interest in field hockey as a club sport will be addressed.
