Worcester, MA- The Philadelphia University men's basketball team (6-5, 2-1 CACC) scored a hard fought non-conference win on Thursday afternoon in a 73-70 overtime victory against host Assumption College (5-7, 2-4 NE-10).
PhilaU was led by sophomore guard Jim Connolly's 23 points, while AC's Bobby Harris led all scorers with 26 points along with 10 boards.
While AC stayed in the game with their rebounding (49- PhilaU's 39), the Rams held their own by shooting 43% from field goal range (AC shot 35%).
Of note on the night was PhilaU junior center Temi Adebayo's career-high nine blocks.
While AC dashed out to an early lead, a Connolly three-ball on PhilaU's last possession of the first half gave the Rams a 31-30 advantage at halftime.
With a made free-throw by AC's Corey Schmidt with 10 seconds remaining in regulation, things weren't looking good for the Rams but Connolly drained two free-throws with six seconds remaining and AC missed a layup at the buzzer to send the game into extra time.
In OT, junior forward Corey Francisco opened things up with a bucket, followed by junior J.J. Gundry who added two. Francisco finished with 15 while Gundry had 11 points and 11 rebounds. At 2:49, Adebayo swished two free-throws of his own and PhilaU never trailed in overtime, hanging on for a 73-70 win. Adebayo had 15 points and seven boards to go along with his nine block performance.
PhilaU plays next on Thursday (1/6) in a 6 p.m. home game vs. the University of Bridgeport.
