PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University men's basketball team capped a string of three games in four days with a 70-69 victory over Kutztown University in a non-conference showdown Tuesday night in the Gallagher Center.
The Rams picked up their second win during the busy stretch and improve to 3-1 overall. Kutztown is now 1-3.
Freshman forward Peter Alexis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa/Holy Redeemer) scored 11 of his game-high 17 points in the second half. He also grabbed 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Nick Schlitzer (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) knocked down four three-pointers on his way to a 16-point night.
Freshman guard Andre Gibbs (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) netted 14 points and, for the second straight game, dished out six assists. Junior guard Nick Christian (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) finished with 12 points and a season-high 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the year.
Micah Fraction paced the Golden Bears with 16 points and six assists. Tracy Peal had 12 points and six rebounds. Tyler Brooks contributed 10 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.
Kutztown used a 16-4 run to take a 16-9 lead with 13:08 left in the first half. Kenny Wilson led the charge with seven points.
The Rams stormed back, with the help of two Schlitzer treys, and outscored the Golden Bears 20-7 over a 6:23 span to take a 29-23 lead. The advantage reached eight when Christian hit a lay-up with 3:12 left in the half to make the score 35-27.
Philadelphia didn't trail in the second half, but had Kutztown tie the score twice (42-42 and 44-44).
Leading 60-57, Philadelphia scored six straight points to extend the gap to 66-57 with 3:57 to go.
Fraction brought Kutztown back with 10 of its final 12 points to close the score to 70-69. Philadelphia hung on as Peal's three-point attempt at the buzzer bounced off the rim.
Both teams had a good shooting night as Philadelphia hit half (27-of-54) of its attempts and Kutztown shot 46.4 percent (26-of-56). The Rams outrebounded Kutztown, 31-26.
Philadelphia ends its five-game home stand with a non-conference game against Bridgeport on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 1:30 p.m.
