WILMINGTON, Del. – A stellar second half performance that saw the Philadelphia University men's basketball team score 52 points and shoot 64.7 percent carried the Rams to a 77-66 win over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent Goldey-Beacom Tuesday night in the Jones Center.
Freshman forward Peter Alexis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Holy Redeemer) backed up his 35-point performance on Saturday against Concordia with 33 points, on 16-of-21 shooting, and a career-high 20 rebounds on Tuesday. In the second half, he had 19 points and 11 rebounds.
It is the Rams' first 20-rebound game since Mike Yocum corralled 20 rebounds against the College of the Saint Rose on March 15, 2008.
Sophomore guard Nick Schlitzer (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) netted 14 points. Senior guard Stephen Griffin (Bowie, Md./Paint Branch) scored all of his season-high 11 points during the final 20 minutes.
Senior guard Jim Connolly (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) opened the second half by draining a pair of three-pointers from the right wing to give Philadelphia (16-8, 11-4 CACC) its first lead of the game at 31-30.
After Goldey-Beacom's Julian Wright tied the game at 41 with a pair of free throws, Philadelphia took control of the contest with a 13-0 run, which included six points from Alexis and five from Griffin, to take a 54-41 advantage with 8:02 left.
With the lead trimmed to 61-49 after a pair of Marcus Porter free throws, junior guard Nick Christian's (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) tip-in of a Griffin miss on the Rams' next possession sparked an 8-0 spurt that gave Philadelphia a game-high 20-point cushion (69-49) with 2:53 left.
In the first half, the Rams never led and faced multiple eight-point deficits. Freshman forward TJ Huggins (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams) made a lay-up with 26 seconds left to cut the margin to 30-25 at the break.
A.J. Picard was the leading scorer for Goldey-Beacom (8-17, 4-12 CACC) with 25 points. Porter finished the contest with 15 points and six rebounds.
Philadelphia finished the game shooting 50.0 percent (33-of-66) from the field, while Goldey-Beacom connected at a 45.6 percent (26-of-57) clip. The Rams outrebounded the Lightning 43-25, 22-6 after halftime.
