Men’s basketball earns 5 seed for NCAA East Region Tournament, draws Franklin Pierce in first round

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University men's basketball team earned the No. 5 seed for the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament and will face No. 4 seed Franklin Pierce in the first round on Saturday, March 15 in Moore Field House on the campus of Southern Connecticut University.

The Rams (25-6) are making their 33rd appearance in the Tournament, the 27th under Hall of Fame head coach Herb Magee, after earning the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's automatic bid with a 42-41 win over Holy Family in the CACC championship game on Saturday. Philadelphia's 33 appearances trail only Kentucky Wesleyan's 37 trips to the tournament for the most in Division II.

Philadelphia owns a record of 33-36 in NCAA Tournament games.

Franklin Pierce (20-7) received an at-large bid into the Tournament after falling to Le Moyne 73-59 in the quarterfinal round of the Northeast-10 Tournament on March 2.

Philadelphia is 0-2 all-time against Franklin Pierce. The last meeting between the schools came in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Division II East Region Tournament, a 59-58 win by the top-seeded Ravens.

The winner of this game will face the winner of the game between No. 1 seed Southern Connecticut and No. 8 seed Bridgeport in a semifinal round game on Sunday, March 16 at 7:30 p.m.

The winner of the East Region heads to the 2014 NCAA Division II Men's Elite Eight at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind.
