Men's basketball defeated by USciences 80-64

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University men's basketball team was upended by the University of the Sciences 80-64 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) tilt Saturday afternoon in Bobby Morgan Arena.

Philadelphia, who had its winning streak snapped at six, is now 9-5 overall and 4-2 in CACC play. USciences moves its record to 12-4 overall, 6-2 against the conference.

Forward Derek Johnson (Conshohocken, Pa./Atlantic Christian) drained four 3-pointers and led the Rams with 18 points.

Guard Nick Schlitzer (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) shot 7-of-14 from the field on his way to a 16-point game, while forward TJ Huggins (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams) connected on seven of his 11 attempts to end up with 14 points.

Guard Andre Gibbs (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) contributed 11 points.

Garret Kerr paced the Devils with 23 points and 13 rebounds, both game highs. Will Gregoritis poured in 19 points.

USciences shot 59.2 percent (29-of-49) overall, while Philadelphia hit 42.6 percent (26-of-61) of its attempts.

Philadelphia jumped out to an early 7-2 lead on a Johnson jumper 2:51 into the contest. The Rams stayed out in front until Wes Kerr drained a 3-pointer at the 7:31 mark to give the Devils a 15-14 advantage.

A 15-6 run, capped off by 3-pointers from Garret Kerr and Gregoritis, increased the USciences' cushion to 32-22. Philadelphia closed the gap to 33-27 with 12 seconds left in the first half thanks to an Eric Long (Bronx, N.Y./Marianapolis Prep) layup.

Garret Kerr made a jumper at 17:08 to spark a 17-5 run that gave USciences a 56-36 lead and control of the game.

Philadelphia heads to Pace for a non-conference contest on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
