Alexis, Huggins lead men's basketball to 77-64 win over District of Columbia

PHILADELPHIA – TJ Huggins (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams) and Peter Alexis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Holy Redeemer) both scored 20 points for the Philadelphia University men's basketball team as the Rams defeated the University of the District of Columbia 77-64 in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon in the Gallagher Center.

Brendan Kilpatrick (Norristown, Pa./Malvern Prep) and Kaison Randolph (Trenton, N.J./Pennington Prep) contributed 13 points each.

Philadelphia (2-0) shot 51.7 percent in the opening half to get out to a 42-25 halftime advantage.

Trailing 5-4 after a Thomas Robinson layup, the Rams took charge by outscoring the Firebirds (0-2) 21-4 over an 8:31 span to take a 25-9 lead. Alexis, who started the run with a dunk, scored a team-best seven during the surge. The Rams were 6-of-11 from the field.

With Philadelphia's lead sitting at 31-17, the Rams would rattle off 10 of the next 12 points, capped off by two Eric Long (Bronx, N.Y./Marianapolis Prep) free throws at the 1:36 mark, to take a game-high 22-point lead (41-19).

In the second half, the Firebirds closed the gap to 52-42 by going on a 15-4 run, that included six of Kasim Chandler's 16 points. UDC scored 12 of the 15 points in the paint.

Philadelphia answered the run with six consecutive points to reclaim a 16-point lead (58-42) with 8:26 left. The Firebirds chipped away at the Rams' lead, eventually getting it down to 71-64 on a Joseph Nickerson layup with 55 seconds left to play.

The Rams salted the game away by hitting six of their eight free throw attempts and keeping the Firebirds off the board.

Erin Senegal scored a game-high 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting to pace the Firebirds. Nickerson contributed 10 points.

Behind 10 rebounds from Alexis, the Rams enjoyed a 37-30 rebounding advantage. Philadelphia finished the game shooting 46.0 percent from the field, while UDC connected at a 37.9 percent clip.

The Rams open Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) with a home game against the University of the Sciences on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 8 p.m.
