ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) men's basketball team (2-1) dropped its weekend finale at the Disney DII Tip-Off Classic to Palm Beach Atlantic (1-2) by a final of 79-71 from Santiago Canyon College in Orange, Calif.
For the second time this weekend, freshman Alexander Gorton led all scorers with 21 points on 6-of-14 shooting including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc.
Senior Kaison Randolph and sophomore Kylan Guerra both finished with 18 points. Randolph made six shots including three three-points while Guerra made four baskets while going 9-of-14 from the free-throw line. Guerra also grabbed nine boards, four steals and three assists.
Sophomore Josh Bradanese scored nine points off the bench for the Rams on 3-of-5 shooting.
Jefferson shot just 35.1 percent from the field after shooting 55.1 in the regular-season opening win on Friday over Concordia (Cal.) and 45.1 in the victory over Point Loma on Saturday, which ended with Randolph's game-winning three-pointer.
The Rams trailed the Sailfish 39-26 at the half before outscoring Palm Beach Atlantic, 45-40, in the second half.
Play in the paint made a difference for Palm Beach Atlantic, who led the battle 38-16.
The Sailfish shot 57.1 percent from the field, including 40.0 percent from deep, in the opening 20 minutes which played a role in the Rams' first loss of 2017-18.
Following the opening weekend of play, the Rams will take on the Temple Owls for the first time since 1976 on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. from the Liacouras Center in a charity exhibition to benefit those impacted by the recent hurricanes in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico.
