Men's Soccer Leads the Charge, Beating NJIT 1-0 in Overtime

On a glorious Homecoming, Reunion and Family Day at Philadelphia
University, all of the fall teams competing on and around campus
were victorious. None was more dramatic than Head Coach
Matt Digney's men's soccer team earning their
first win of the 2007 season, just one minute, twenty seconds into
overtime. Junior John Cloud scored his first
goal of the season off a perfect corner kick from senior
Devon Klipp and the Rams broke through for a
1-0 win against New Jersey Institute of Technology
after regulation play ended in a scoreless tie. Sophomore
goalkeeper Ezra Cassel continued his fantastic
play in front of the net, saving five of the six shots mustered by
the Highlanders.
Three of the saves made by Cassel towards the end of the first half
were spectacular, and gave the Rams the momentum they needed to
stay in the game. The contest was the Atlantic Soccer
Conference (ASC) opener for Philadelphia University, whose record
now stands at 1-7-1 overall and of course a perfect 1-0-0 in the
league. The loss drops N.J.I.T. to 1-7-0 on the year, and
0-2-0 in the ASC. Men's soccer resumes play on Tuesday night
in Annapolis, Md. against the U.S. Naval Academy. Kickoff
time for the game at Navy is 7:00 p.m.
