Gladic Gets Game-Winner in 2-0 Shutout of Wheeling Jesuit
Philadelphia, PA- Philadelphia University men's soccer team (1-1) clinched a 2-0 shutout over Wheeling Jesuit University (0-1) on Saturday afternoon at Ravenhill Field for their first win of 2009. Goals were scored by senior forward Svetozar Gladic (Novi Sad, Serbia/ Sacred Heart) and sophomore midfielder Ryan Purnell (Hamilton, Bermuda/ Berkeley Inst.).
Gladic got his goal at 12:49 into the first half, unassisted on a direct kick. The Rams held the slim margin going into the final seconds of the game, when Purnell headed his first collegiate goal with just 22 seconds left in regulation. Senior forward Kristoffer Perez (Parlin, NJ/ CBA) had the assist on the second score.
PhilaU senior goalie Buddy Custer (Cinnaminson, NJ/ Cinnaminson) had 10 saves, while WJU keeper Shane Young made eight stops for the Cardinals.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday (9/9) when they host East Stroudsburg University at 4:30 p.m. at Ravenhill Field.
