Men's Tennis 2008-09 Season Highlights
Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University men's tennis team completed a championship season in 2008-09, winning the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) inaugural Men's Tennis Championship in a dominating 5-0 performance over the University of the Sciences and earning a trip to the NCAA East Regional Tournament. The team held an 18-8 overall record, including a perfect 10-0 CACC run.
Men's head coach Marty Gilbert was named CACC ‘Coach of the Year' for his team's performance.
The Rams earned the #6 seed in the NCAA Tournament, but exited early with a 5-0 loss to #3 Stonehill College.
Earlier in the year at the CACC Individual Tournament, freshman #1 singles sensation Adrian Torroella-Cruz (Gainesville, FL/ Gainesville) brought the singles trophy back to Henry Ave & Schoolhouse Lane and also took the doubles championship with rookie teammate Manoli Sgouros (Forest Hills, NY/ Holy Cross HS). Torroella-Cruz went 19-3 at #1 singles on the year and 16-7 in doubles, earning CACC ‘Player of the Year', CACC ‘Rookie of the Year' and All-Conference for his rookie feat.
Sgouros held an 18-3 record at #2 singles, while #5 singles sophomore Seppi Hutter (Bellevue, WA/ Bellevue) had the team's most combined singles and doubles wins (37) this season. Hutter teamed up with sophomore Tom McAvoy (Phoenixville, PA/ Phoenixville) to get 17 doubles wins- a team best.
