2011 Men’s Tennis Season Highlights
Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University men's tennis team finished an impressive season with an overall record of 18-7 and 5-1 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. The team made their third consecutive appearance in the CACC Championship and advanced to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament for the second year in a row.
After posting a nine-game winning streak leading through the CACC Semi Finals where they topped the University of the Sciences 5-2, the Rams' conference play ended with a 5-0 fall to #3 nationally ranked Concordia College in the CACC Championship. The season would not be over as the Rams earned the #4 seed heading into the first round of the NCAA Regionals. They marked their second NCAA victory with a 5-1 win over #5 Merrimack College. The season ended with a 5-0 falling to Concordia in the NCAA East Regional championship match.
Coming up big on the court was senior Seppi Hutter. He finished 16-5 overall in singles and 17-7 in doubles with his accomplice and fellow senior Tom McAvoy. Hutter and McAvoy each capped their 100th career wins this season. Hutter reached his on 9/26 in an 8-1 win at Adelphi University, McAvoy claimed his with an 8-0 singles win at St. Thomas Aquinas College (4/3). McAvoy finished the season with an overall record of 6-2 in singles.
Also coming up big in singles play were #4 junior Ryan Christopher finishing 15-7, #5 junior Eric Guerrero at 13-6 and #1 sophomore Kyle Burke with 13-7. Burke was honored by the CACC by being named to the 2010-11 All-Conference Second Team. Junior Manoli Sgouros was given Honorable Mention by the CACC after finishing 15-6 in singles.
New members to the men's tennis team include Head Coach Lance Lee whose experience includes two full seasons of play at the Division I level and serving as Director of Tennis at Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education Center since 2007.
Men's tennis will return to the court on September 17th for the ITA Regionals.
