Men's tennis begins spring season with 5-4 setback to Monmouth
PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia University men's tennis team opened its spring season with a 5-4 loss to Division I Monmouth University Friday night at the Legacy Youth Tennis Center.
The Rams (2-5) got off to a strong start by claiming two of the three doubles matches. The No. 3 tandem of Chris Casamassima and Long Vo got Philadelphia on the board wth an 8-6 win over Eric Pierce and Joe Talafous. Ayman Barakat and Nail Rachidi gave the Rams the lead going into singles play with an 8-6 win over Jason Prezant and Jason Rothstein in the No. 2 flight.
In singles action, Monmouth came back to earn the victory with wins of four of the six matches. Casamassima cruised past Talafous, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 6 match to claim the Rams' third point. Dylan Bhaerman needed a third-set tiebreak to fight off Pierce in the No. 5 match, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6).
Philadelphia next match comes on Thursday, March 13 against Ithaca College in Hilton Head, S.C.
