Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University Lady Rams (10-13, 3-5 CACC) got their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) sweep of the spring, besting the Wilmington University Wildcats (7-15, 3-5 CACC) 1-0 in the first game and 3-2 in a 10 inning nightcap.
In game one, freshman catcher Katie Renner (Berryville, VA/ Brunswick) knocked her first collegiate homer over the left field fence in the third inning to lift the PhilaU Lady Rams over Wilmington University 1-0. Renner went 2-3 at the plate, adding a double in the first inning.
PhilaU freshman pitcher Ali Schmidt (Cordova, MD/ Easton) tossed a one-hitter to earn the victory, going 7.0 innings with eight strikeouts, while WU's Kim Lawrence sat down six in the loss for the Wildcats.
In game two, WU got on the board first with a two-run homerun in the top of the third inning. PhilaU responded in the fourth with an RBI double from junior outfielder Maggie Desmond (Bayport, NY/ St. John the Baptist) followed by an RBI single from junior outfielder Kristyn Loughery (Phoenixville, PA/ Phoenixville) to tie it 2-2.
The contest went into extra innings and the Lady Rams broke the stalemate in the bottom of the 10th with a runner placed on second base to start the inning. With two outs, freshman shortstop Kayla Czuprynski (Buffalo, NY/ W. Seneca) scored the winning run from third on a throwing error by the Wildcat third baseman to take the 3-2 victory.
PhilaU freshman pitcher Amber Beauchemin (Galloway, NJ/ Absegami) got the win in 4.1 innings of work- striking out five, while WU's Katie Turner took the loss- going 5.2 innings and striking out 10.
PhilaU returns to action tomorrow (4/1) as they host a doubleheader vs. Georgian Court University beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Bucky Harris Field.
