Softball Sweeps USP 10-3, 4-3 in CACC Doubleheader

Philadelphia, PA- The Lady Rams softball squad (14-13, 6-6 CACC) swept a conference doubleheader over the University of the Sciences Devils (8-20, 4-6 CACC) on a brisk Tuesday afternoon at McNeil Field.   PhilaU won handily 10-3 in the first game and a seventh inning homer from junior pitcher/infielder Kelly Rauco (Nutley, NJ/ Nutley) gave the Lady Rams a 4-3 win in game two.   

In the first game, freshman pitcher Ali Schmidt (Cordova, MD/ Easton) went all seven innings, allowing three runs while striking out eight.  The Lady Rams got three runs on the board in the first inning as junior second baseman Maggie Desmond (Bayport, NY/ St. John the Baptist) smacked a bases loaded double to give PhilaU a 3-0 cushion.   Desmond would go 4-7 at the plate in the game, smacking three doubles with seven RBIs.

USP scored on an error by PhilaU's Desmond in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-1.

PhilaU freshman right fielder Sara Romano (Harrisburg, PA/ Central Dauphin) tripled to right to start the third and another double from Desmond would score another run.  The Lady Rams scored three more runs in the fifth as Desmond and freshman third baseman Katie Renner (Berryville, VA/ Brunswick) doubled in one run each and Rauco singled in Renner to go up 7-1.

Desmond doubled in the sixth and Renner singled in PhilaU's final runs to lead 10-1, but USP responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs (one earned) to make the final 10-3. 

In game two USP took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on an error by PhilaU pitcher Schmidt and an RBI single.  The Devils added another run on a wild pitch in the third to hold onto a 3-0 advantage.

PhilaU waited until the top of the sixth inning to explode for three runs as freshman Danielle Parisi (Teaneck, NJ/ W.Windsor-Plainsboro) hit an RBI double and junior designated player Kristin Giamatteo (Bellmore, NY/ Wellington Mepham) followed with a two RBI single to left field.  Rauco won it in the seventh with a solo homer. 

PhilaU freshman pitcher Amber Beauchemin (Galloway, NJ/ Absegami) got the win in 4.0 innings of work, allowing no runs and striking out one. 

The Lady Rams return to action on Thursday (4/9) at Chestnut Hill College for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
