Softball Hits One Out of the Park in 2009
Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University softball team capped a historic run in 2009, setting a new record with 25 wins- the most victories in one season under head coach John Kelly.
The team punched their first-ever ticket to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Softball Tournament as the #6 seed. The Lady Rams turned heads at the Tournament, going 2-2 overall and knocking out #1 seeded Dominican College before getting eliminated in a 5-1 loss to Bloomfield College.
Freshman pitcher Ali Schmidt was named to the All-Tournament Team and CACC 2nd Team All-Conference- she had 19 wins on the season and held a 2.11 ERA with 281 strikeouts. Junior outfielder Maggie Desmond also earned All-Tournament honors after smacking two home runs in the postseason.
Junior outfielder Jen Richard earned CACC 1st Team All-Conference accolades as she finished the year with a .306 batting average, including a team-high 49 hits. She also led the team with 10 stolen bases.
Also making waves as a rookie was freshman catcher Katie Renner, who finished the season leading the team in batting (.324), doubles (17), home runs (3), RBIs (27) and total bases (76).
The PhilaU squad graduated just one senior- Lindsay White, and should come back even stronger in 2010.
