Renner Goes Yard as Softball Splits Twin Bill at #5 Georgian Court
Lakewood, NJ- The Philadelphia University softball team (18-14, 10-6 CACC) split a conference twin bill with #5 East regionally-ranked Georgian Court University (28-14, 14-6 CACC) on Monday afternoon. The Lady Rams won the first game 3-2 in a thrilling eight-inning contest, then fell 6-2 in the night cap.
PhilaU sophomore catcher Katie Renner (Berryville, VA/ Brunswick) smacked a two-run homer in the first inning of game one to give her team an early lead 2-0. With the contest tied 2-2 in the eighth, senior infielder Maggie Desmond (Bayport, NY/ St. John’s) doubled to left field and scored the winning run on a single by freshman infielder Kacie DeMaio (Highland, NY/ Highland) to take it 3-2.
Sophomore hurler Ali Schmidt (Cordova, MD/ Easton) had seven strikeouts in the complete game for PhilaU, earning her 13th win of the season. GCU’s Diana Sanserva took the loss for the Lions.
In game two, the Lady Rams managed just two runs, waiting until the sixth inning and down 6-0 to score both on a single by sophomore infielder Danielle Parisi (Teaneck, NJ/ West Windsors-Plainsboro N.) and a fielder’s choice from sophomore outfielder Sara Romano (Harrisburg, PA/ Central Dauphin).
For the game, freshman pitcher Nicole Singel (Exton, PA/ Downingtown East) took the loss, going 3.1 innings and allowing five runs while junior hurler Randi Wozniak (Newtown Sq., PA/ Marple Newtown) went 2.2 innings and allowed just one run. GCU’s Brooke Hull got the ‘W’.
The maroon and gray pick right up for a doubleheader on Tuesday (4/20) at city-rival Chestnut Hill College at 3 p.m.
