Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University softball team (20-14, 12-6 CACC) secured a two game sweep over Chestnut Hill College (2-32, 2-20 CACC) on Tuesday afternoon, led by PhilaU sophomore pitcher Ali Schmidt (Cordova, MD/ Easton) who threw the first-ever perfect game in PhilaU softball history.
The Lady Rams also reached the 20 win plateau for the second straight year.
In game one, senior designated hitter Maggie Desmond (Bayport, NY/ St. John’s) led the team with four RBIs going 2-2, while fellow senior Kristin Giamatteo (Bellmore, NY/ Wellington Mepham) went 2-4 with three RBIs.
Schmidt went the distance with 10 strikeouts in five innings to effectively mercy-rule the Griffins.
Game two featured a much different contest, as PhilaU took the lead in the seventh on an RBI single from sophomore catcher Katie Renner (Berryville, VA/ Brunswick), but CHC came back to tie it at 2-2 and send the game into extra innings.
PhilaU junior outfielder Jen Richard (Millstone, NJ/ Allentown) had the game-winning hit, a triple to left field to score two and the Lady Rams added two more to make the final 6-3. Freshman pitcher Nicole Singel (Exton, PA/ Downingtown East) picked up the win, going seven innings with five strikeouts.
The maroon and gray return to action on Thursday (4/22) at the University of the Sciences at 3:00 p.m.
