Softball Cranks Out 2 Wins Over Nyack on Senior Day

Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University Lady Rams (24-14, 16-6 CACC) chalked up two convincing wins over the Nyack College Warriors (2-37, 0-26 CACC) on Saturday afternoon, helped by perfect game pitched by sophomore hurler Ali Schmidt (Cordova, MD/ Easton) in the first game of the day.  The Lady Rams won 8-0 in five innings and then 10-1 in six.  The perfect game was Schmidt’s second in the week.

On the day, Schmidt picked up both wins on the rubber and struck out 19 batters in 11 innings of work, with no walks and one earned run.  NC pitcher Sarah Bolles took both losses for the Warriors.

In game one, an offensive explosion by the Lady Rams in the third inning resulted in seven runs on four hits, including triples from senior infielder Kelly Rauco (Nutley, NJ/ Nutley) and sophomore outfielder Sara Romano (Harrisburg, PA/ Central Dauphin) to give PhilaU a 7-0 edge.

Romano ended the game early in the fifth, scoring senior infielder Kristen Giamatteo (Bellmore, NY/ Wellington Mepham) on a single through the left side to make it an 8-0 mercy-rule victory.

The Lady Rams continued their charge into game two, as junior outfielder Jen Richard (Millstone Twp., NJ/ Allentown) and Romano each recorded triples to give the home squad an early 3-0 advantage.

Senior Kristyn Loughery (Phoenixville, PA/ Phoenixville) smacked a three-bagger in the bottom of the third to bring in two more runs and make it 5-0.

Nyack broke their silence in the fourth, as Christina Braziel hit a solo homer.  Yet, PhilaU’s bats stayed hot as Rauco and Richard each reached on singles and came around to take a 7-1 lead.  Giamatteo added a two-run double in the sixth to give the Lady Rams a 10-1 mercy-rule win.

Next up for PhilaU will be a doubleheader at Post University on Sunday (4/25) at 12:00 p.m.
