Schmidt, Giamatteo Add Fire Power But Softball Losses 2-0, 8-7

Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University Lady Rams (9-11, 4-4 CACC) suffered two tough losses 2-0 and 8-7 to the Bloomsburg University Huskies (29-3, 6-0 CACC) on Monday afternoon.  PhilaU sophomore designated hitter Danielle Parisi (Teaneck, NJ/ WW Plainsboro N.) knocked out her second career grand slam in the second game of the day.

In game one, sophomore hurler Ali Schmidt (Cordova, MD/ Easton) racked up 10 strikeouts and allowed just one earned run.  BU scored their two runs in the sixth inning, as the first runner got on via walk, followed by a PhilaU throwing error to put two Husky players on.  BU’s Lacy Mauro had the game-winning hit, a two-run double.

Offensively the Lady Rams managed just two hits, from senior infielder Kristen Giamatteo (Bellmore, NY/ Wellington Mepham) and junior outfielder Kate Desmond (Bayport, NY/ St. John).  BU junior pitcher Shavaun Fisher struck out 11 in the contest.

Game two featured a two-run first inning for the Lady Rams, getting RBIs on sacrifice flies from Giamatteo and Parisi to take a 2-1 lead.

In the third, the Lady Rams added another score, making it 3-1 as senior infielder Kelly Rauco (Nutley, NJ/ Nutley) singled in sophomore catcher Katie Renner (Berryville, VA/ Brunswick) who reached on a double.

Parisi’s grand slam came in the fourth inning with two outs, knocking one over far left to put the home squad up 7-1.  But BU responded with four runs in the fifth on two hits-a double from Amanda Koch and an RBI single from Sam Pientack to cut the PhilaU lead to 7-4.

BU tied it up in the sixth on a one-out double from Lacy Mauro to make it seven all, and added another run to take a 8-7 lead- the final score.

PhilaU’s Schmidt went 5.1 innings and allowed six earned runs, while junior pitcher Randi Wozniak (Newtown Sq., PA/ Marple Newtown) took the loss for PhilaU.  BU’s Cait Paine earned the win.
