Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University softball team (7-11, 1-7 CACC) was swept 5-1 and 12-2 by the Caldwell College Cougars (9-13, 3-3 CACC) on Sunday afternoon.
In a doubleheader that saw PhilaU eke out just three runs on the day, junior infielder Katie Renner had two RBI's (game two) and sophomore shortstop Kacie DeMaio had the only RBI in the first game on a groundout to the shortstop.
PhilaU junior catcher Allison Glaser went 3-6 on the day with a double in the first game. In that contest, the Rams trailed 3-0 after one inning on two hits and two PhilaU errors. The Cougars scored another in the second inning on an error and their fifth run in the fourth inning on a line-drive home-run by Cassandra Cefolo. It wasn't until the final frame that PhilaU got their run, as Glaser scored on DeMaio's groundout.
On the rubber, PhilaU junior Ali Schmidt took the loss and goes to 5-6 on the season, while CC's Brittany Pulido improved to 5-2.
In game two, Caldwell again took an early lead- this time 6-0 by the top of the third on seven hits, including a two-run homer by Jacklyn Bates. The Rams responded with two runs in the bottom of the third on an error by the CC center-fielder. CC added another run in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice bunt. Trailing 7-2 enter the seventh inning, the Cougars exploded for five runs on four hits to make it a 12-2 defeat for PhilaU.
PhilaU freshman pitcher Ally Vrcek took the loss (1-3), while CC's Juliette Wilson (2-6) picked up the 'W'.
The Rams play next on Wednesday (4/6) in a home doubleheader vs. Goldey-Beacom College at 3:30 p.m.
