PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Philadelphia University softball team kicked off its 2012 home schedule with a pair of non-conference losses to Millersville University on Tuesday afternoon. The Marauders took game one 7-0 and game two 5-1.
In the second game, Philadelphia (2-11) scored its run in the bottom of the fourth inning on an infield single by first baseman Alexandra Hultberg. Third baseman Katie Renner, who singled to reach base, scored the run.
Millersville (5-13) took a 3-0 lead in the top half of that inning on a two-run double by winning pitcher Ashley Cantiello and a RBI single by third baseman Jamie Motsko.
Center fielder Alison Glaser had two of Philadelphia's seven hits.
Catcher Gabbie Berry paced the Marauders with a 3-for-4 game at the plate, including a RBI double in the seventh. Center fielder Ally Homa, second baseman Danielle DiFilippo and right fielder Taylor Odell-Smith each had two hits
Cantiello went four innings, allowing one run on four hits. Stephanie Kulp worked out of a jam in the seventh to earn the save. Samantha Abromavage took the loss. She struck out two.
In game one Millersville's Sarah Bertoni threw a no-hitter and allowed just three base runners, one on a walk and two via error. Bertoni struck out two.
The Marauders scored five times in the second inning, which included a three-run home run to left from Berry.
Philadelphia returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play with a doubleheader at Chestnut Hill on Friday, March 23 starting at 3 p.m.
