LYNDHURST, N.J. – The Philadelphia University softball team had its five-game Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) winning streak come to an end after the Rams were swept by Felician University, 4-0 and 2-1, Saturday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
In the opener, Philadelphia managed just four hits off of the Felician duo of Ashley Owens and Erin Powers. Naomi Stas (Tuckerton, N.J./Pinelands Regional) had two hits in three at-bats, while Jovanna Alfonsi (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) and Monica Levins (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area) each collected one hit.
Felician (12-13, 4-4 CACC) took a 2-0 lead after scoring a run in the second and fifth innings.
In the top of the sixth inning, Philadelphia (10-13, 5-3 CACC) managed to put runners on second and third with just one out thanks to two Felician errors. However, the Rams were unable to cash in on the miscues as the next two hitters struck out and flew out to end the inning.
The Golden Falcons came back in the bottom half of the inning and scored two more runs on a Zeaenna Brackett single to double the advantage to 4-0.
Stephanie Pepper (Toms River, N.J./Central Regional) struck out seven Golden Falcons in a complete-game loss. She gave up three earned runs on nine hits. Owens went the first five innings, allowing four hits and striking out six to get the win. Powers threw two perfect innings of relief—including three strikeouts—to record the save.
Nicole Speigelberg and Brynne Bauman had two hits a piece for Felician.
The Rams fell behind 2-0 in the second game after surrendering a single run in the first and third innings. Jackie Duenas gave Felician the early lead with a two-out RBI single. Bauman tacked on an insurance run as she delivered a two-out base hit during the third inning.
Philadelphia played small ball to push a run across the plate in the fifth to cut its deficit to 2-1. After Kayla Henry-Caltabellotta (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) started the frame with a single, Shannon Weaver (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached safely on a dropped throw. Stas reached base on a fielder's choice that cut down Weaver, and then stole second to put runners at second and third. Madison Heno (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) brought Henry-Caltabellotta home with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Five different players had one hit for Philadelphia. Brackett and Bauman each recorded two hits.
Powers was the winning pitcher as she went four innings in a relief role. Stas fanned three batters over six innings in a losing effort.
Philadelphia returns home to face Dominican (N.Y.) in a CACC doubleheader on Monday, April 3 at 2:30 p.m.
